Richard Kalka, 87, of Granite City, IL passed away on the afternoon of Tuesday,November 25th. with his loving wife by his side.

He was raised in Madison, IL but later resided in Granite City. He is survived by his loving and caring wife Judy Kalka (Hendricks), his two children Debbie Donley (Joel), Kevin Kalka (Kirsten) and one granddaughter Kenna. He also is survived by his twin brother Robert.

He retired from the Madison Post Office after 40 years of service. He enjoyed family time, gardening, fishing, sporting events, music and telling stories.

He will be missed dearly but will no longer be suffering. He’s now at peace and will be with Jesus in Heaven.

Gerald Ray Sims, 73, of Granite City, IL, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 26, 2025. Born on July 23, 1952, in Eldorado, Illinois. Gerald was a gentle soul whose kindness, humor, and steadfast loyalty touched all who knew him.

Gerald was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Billy Ray Sims and Dorothy Jean (Monday) Sims, both of Alton. Their warmth and values shaped the man he became-quietly strong, deeply thoughtful, and devoted to the people in his life.

He is survived by his siblings, Wendell J. Sims (Gail) and Janet S. Siria; his niece, Rhonda J. Soest (Edward); and his nephew, Kevin R. Scifres (Christina), all of whom held a special place in his heart. Gerald also leaves behind his dear friend, Donald Stumpe, whose companionship, and support enriched his years. In addition to close family, Gerald will be remembered fondly by many extended relatives, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to share in his life.

Gerald’s gentle presence, quick wit, and generous spirit will be deeply missed. Though he lived quietly, his impact was lasting-felt not in grand gestures but in the constancy of his kindness, the sincerity of his friendship, and the love he carried for those around him.

As his family mourns his passing, they take comfort in knowing he left this world peacefully and is now reunited with those who went before him. His memory will be held dearly and carried forward with gratitude for the years they shared.

Jay Thomas LeMaster aged 63, passed away peacefully on 11-23-25 comforted by his family at home in Coffeen, IL. He is preceded in death by his father Harold LeMaster, mother Madeline LeMaster, sister Tina LeMaster, and brother Scott LeMaster. 

 He was born on March 26 1962, in Granite City, to Harold and Madeline LeMaster. He was a proud resident of Granite City for many years before building his home in Coffeen where he enjoyed retirement. 

He met Ina LeMaster on March 26 1986, and was joined in marriage March 27 1993, in Granite City. 

 He worked proudly out of Laborers Local 397, displaying strength, grit, and heart into his work. 27 of those years, he served the city of Granite City, as a foreman of the Public Works Dept. He loved all things construction, always building or fixing things, as well as being outdoors fishing and hunting. 

 Jay was very outgoing, he knew no stranger. He always had the ability to make anyone feel welcome and smile. He loved his family, and friends alike. He is survived by his loving wife, Ina; younger brother, Lyndon; half-brother Larry Merle LeMaster; son Brent (Stephanie); son Derek (Ceren); his favorite niece Rebecca; and many cousins. Charles “Tally” Ragan, 60, of Granite City, IL died on Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at his home.

He was born on October 28, 1965 in Granite City, IL to Charles Edward Ragan and Sandra Kay (nee: Mangiaracino) Ragan.

Charles married Krystal Anderson in Granite City, IL on October 28, 2024.

The loving husband was a kind and generous person to all who knew him.  He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Charles is survived by his wife; a daughter, Brianna (Seth) Ahlmeyer of Marine, IL; 2 sons:  Brandon Ragan of NY and Charles Taylor of Vero Beach, FL; 3 grandchildren:  Regan Ahlmeyer, Louis Ahlmeyer and John Ahlmeyer and a sister, Mistie Valbert of Granite City.

James Albert Aitken, 72, of Granite City, IL died on Thursday, November 27, 2025 at his home.

He was born on February 27, 1953 in Minneapolis, MN to Jack and Luella (nee:  Wells) Aitken.

James married Elizabeth Marsh in Granite City, IL on May 31, 1991.

The loving husband retired from Chrysler after 32 years of service.

Sandra J. “Sandy” Cook, 83, of Glen Carbon and formerly of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully at Stillwater Senior Living in Edwardsville at 2:13 a.m. on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

Born on January 14, 1942, in Granite City, Sandy was the daughter of the late Keith and Ruby (Estler) Hart. On September 17, 1960, she married the love of her life, Lynn D. Cook, at Central Christian Church in Granite City. They shared a beautiful life together until his passing on January 16, 2022.

Sandy retired in 2000 from the IRS District Counsel office in St. Louis after more than 20 years of dedicated service as an office manager. A woman of deep faith, she was an active and devoted member of Central Christian Church, where she joyfully volunteered for countless events throughout the years.

Sandy was known for her warm heart and generous spirit. An exceptional cook, she loved preparing meals and sharing them with others. She enjoyed shopping, picnics at Carlyle Lake, and traveling the world with her husband. Above all, she cherished time with her family and never missed a single sporting event for her grandchildren. Family was the center of her life, and she will be remembered for the love she poured into every moment she shared with them.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tracy French of Troy; her son, Douglas Cook of Maplewood, Missouri; four grandchildren, Adam Gillespie, Alec Gillespie, Nicholas (Alyssa) Gillespie, and Ashley Banks; and two great-granddaughters, Faith Gillespie and Bella Banks. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, extended family, and many cherished friends.

In addition to her beloved husband and parents, Sandy was preceded in death by two sisters, Jane (Robert) Wilhite and Brenda Bewley.

In celebration of her life, and in accordance with her wishes, a private family graveside service will be held at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates.

Linda Kay Barnes, 74 of Swansea, IL, formally of Granite City, IL, died on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at EverVella of Swansea Nursing Center in Swansea, IL.

She was born on June 19, 1951 in Rome, NY to Edward James Fisher and Dorothy (nee: Wood) Fisher.

Linda married James W. Barnes in Ft Leavenworth, KS on June 27, 1970.  He preceded her in death on March 22, 2017.

The loving mother and grandmother did administrative work for different homeless shelters for several years.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and watching Korean soap operas.

Linda is survived by 2 sons:  Shawn (Kristen) Barnes of Granite City and Chris (Robin) Barnes of Granite City; 4 grandchildren:  Colton, Adalyn, Mckenzie and Westley; a brother, Jimmy (Betty) Fisher; a sister, Pat Gafner and other extended family members.

Besides her husband and parents, Linda is preceded in death by other extended family members.

Leo Paul Rios Jr., 63, of Granite City, Illinois, lived for the open road and passed away doing what he loved on Monday, November 24, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born on September 8, 1962, in Gatesville, Texas, the son of Leo Paul Rios Sr. of Texas and the late Rosa (Garcia) Leyva.

Leo was an over-the-road truck driver for Buehler Mayflower Transportation, proudly dedicating 45 years of service to the company. He loved the freedom of the highway, the many places he visited across the United States, and the adventures that came with life on the road.

Above all, Leo was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather—the steady rock of his family. He cherished his dog, Sophie, enjoyed watching football, and never missed a chance to cheer on his Dallas Cowboys. He also loved going out to eat and was always eager to try new restaurants.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his three children, Valerie Rios and Tessa Rios, both of Texas, and Samantha Rios of Granite City; thirteen grandchildren; one great-grandson; and his loving companion and friend of sixteen years, Amanda Hearn of Granite City. He is also survived by his sister, Rose Marie Rios of Texas; two brothers, Adam (Belinda) Rios of Texas and Daniel (Heather) Leyva Jr. of Texas; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Along with his mother, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Daniel Leyva Sr.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be held at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow at the chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025, with Reverend Jason Wyman officiating. Burial will take place at St. John Cemetery on Maryville Road in Granite City.

David Lee Walters, 73, of Granite City, IL, died at 2:36 p.m. Sat. Nov. 22, 2025 at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.

He was born Mar. 6, 1952 in Hillsboro, IL to the late Ada Jane (Furness) Dahler and John Thomas Walter.

David married Grace Lorraine Forsyth on June 14, 1980 in Granite City.  She preceded him in death Mar. 15, 2025.

David had been a mechanical designer for McDonnell-Douglas and later for Basler Electric.  Following retirement, he taught as a Drafting Engineer at Vatterott.  He loved to be outdoors and turkey hunted in in his younger years.  He was also a movie buff and loved photography.

He is survived by 2 sisters, Charlene (James) Kenney, and Marlene Maguire, niece and nephews, Linda Seaborne, Daniel (Crystal) Kenney, Clinton Kenney, and Arthur John Maguire, great-nieces and great-nephews, Nora (Zack Roeske) Kenney, Tristan Kenney, Sara Kenney, Shane Rowan, Ivana Kenney, Nakoa Kenney, Anakin Kenney, Sara Urru, and Bradon Maguire, and great-great-nephews, Leo, Eli and Kai.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Arthur Lee Maguire, and a nephew, Stewart Lee Maguire.

He was born on January 23, 1951 in East St. Louis, IL to Donald Joseph Robinson, Sr and Loretta (nee: McManus) Miller-Stewart.

Donald married Darlene Griffin in Granite City, IL on November 26, 1974.

The U.S. Navy veteran retired from Verizon after 20 years of service.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Granite City.

Morris “Butch” Rolland McGee, age 77, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025, in Estes Park, Colorado. Born on November 24, 1947, in Granite City, Butch was the cherished son of the late Maurice and Betty (Reno) McGee.

A proud United States Army veteran, Butch served his country with honor and carried that same steadfast dedication into every chapter of his life. On October 31, 1981, he married the love of his life, Denise Annette Kirksey, in Granite City. Their marriage was a beautiful partnership built on devotion, laughter, and deep affection until Denise’s passing on December 27, 2023.

Butch retired from Chrysler Corporation after many years of loyal and knowledgeable service. Known for his remarkable talent as a mechanic, he could fix anything he set his mind to—often turning wrenches with a smile and an unmatched patience. He found joy in restoring antique cars, spending time at drag races with Sutton, and working part-time at Gateway Raceway in Madison, Illinois, where he felt right at home among engines, community, and the thrill of the track.

Above all, Butch treasured his family. His greatest joy was time spent with those he loved, and his granddaughter, Harper, was undoubtedly the light of his life. Whether sharing stories, offering guidance, or simply being present, Butch gave his whole heart to his family, and his gentle strength will be deeply missed.

Butch is survived by his loving children, Sarah (Jeff) Wisener of San Diego, California, and Sutton (Lauren) McGee of Marine, Illinois; his beloved granddaughter, Harper McGee; and his dear siblings, Joe (Pam) McGee of East Alton, Illinois, Donna Sutton of Granite City, Illinois, Buddy (Rachel) McGee of Wood River, Illinois, Sharon Lievens of Granite City, Illinois, and David (Lulu) McGee of Florida. Marilyn Kaye Thomas, age 72, of Granite City, IL, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, November 23, 2025, in the loving company of her daughters. She was born on October 23, 1953, in Granite City, IL, the beloved daughter of the late Thomas D. Mundy Sr. and LaDonna I. (McGinnes) Mundy.

On December 31, 1970, Marilyn Mundy married the love of her life, Michael Joseph Thomas, in Granite City. The two shared a beautiful life together until Michael’s passing on February 25, 2019. Marilyn was a member of City Temple in Granite City, where she found joy and purpose in reading her Bible daily and serving the Lord with a faithful heart.

Marilyn spent many years working at the Melvin Price Army Depot commissary before beginning a long and meaningful career as a unit secretary at the Dialysis Center, from which she later retired. Outside of work, she embraced life with a loving and adventurous spirit. She enjoyed quilting, fishing, camping, and traveling. Marilyn also held fond memories as a member of the Eagles Lodge #1126 in Granite City. Above all, Marilyn treasured the moments she spent with her family, especially spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored beyond measure.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Marilyn was preceded in death by her twin sister, Carolyn Harley, and her brothers, Thomas Mundy Jr., Jeffrey Mundy, and David Mundy.

She is survived by her loving children: Michelle (Daniel) Thomas-Niles of Lincoln, NE; Jennifer (Mark) Seagle of St. Louis, MO; and Donna Kaye (Jason) Wernsman of Granite City, IL, proud grandmother to Randy, Tristan, Jadon, and Faith, and a proud great-grandmother to Remy, Jude, Layson, Cole, Maverick, and Melody Jade —each of whom brought immense joy to her life.

She is also survived by her dear sister, Vicky (Kenneth) Rayborn of Mt. Carmel, IL; her sister-in-law, Marilynn Denise (Mark) Townzen; her brothers-in-law, Steven Thomas and Ralph Thomas Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever hold her memory close.

Samuel “Sam” John Paul Sharp, age 92, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at Gateway Regional Medical Center. Born on November 26, 1932, in Elco, Illinois, Sam lived a life defined by resilience, devotion, and boundless generosity.

A Life Rooted in Southern Illinois Sam’s early years were shaped by the rugged beauty of Southern Illinois and the strength of family ties. Raised without his mother, he lived with various relatives while his father worked tirelessly to provide. These formative experiences instilled in Sam a deep appreciation for hard work and storytelling — tales of his youth became cherished family lore.

After graduating from Madison High School, Sam proudly served in the United States Navy. It was on the Island of Malta that fate introduced him to Irene Osmond, the love of his life. They married on September 11, 1954, beginning a remarkable journey of seventy-one years together.

Sam dedicated four decades to Granite City Steel as a scheduler, where he was respected and was involved with the Management Club and Junior Achievement. Known as a jack of all trades, he could fix, build, or restore anything with precision and pride. His home and yard were his canvas, always immaculate, always welcoming.

Whether swapping stories about his travels, going to the casino or lending a hand to a neighbor, Sam never met a stranger. His warmth, humor, and generosity touched everyone he encountered. He was a man who made friends wherever he went and left lasting impressions through kindness and laughter.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Logan and Vaden (Rice) Sharp, his brother Wesley Sharp, and daughter-in-law Jamie Sharp.

He is survived by his devoted wife Irene; loving children, Renie (Rodger, whom he considered his other son) Raub, Denise Settle, Samuel Sharp, and Jeff Sharp; grandchildren Jamie (Brad) Hutchinson, Kim (Chris) Malec, Tiffany (Ricardo) Ruiz, and Casey (Joe) Degenhart; and great-grandchildren Noah, Jackson, Lexi, Ricardo, Michael, and J.D. He also leaves behind countless friends who became family.

A Quiet Farewell Honoring Sam’s wishes, he will be cremated with no formal services. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Wilma Jean Frost, 93, of Granite City and formerly of Mt. Olive, Illinois passed away at 1:14 a.m. on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at Longevity Memory Care of Granite City.

Born August 5, 1932, in Alto Pass, Illinois, she was a daughter of the late Lolo and Esther (Emery) Minton.

She married the love of her life, Gerald Frost on August 17, 1954, in Alto Pass and he passed away in 2009.

Wilma was a longtime faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Litchfield, Illinois. She enjoyed working with ceramics, cooking and traveling with her husband. She cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Timothy Frost of Granite City and Jeff and Tracy Frost of Granite City; three grandchildren and a spouse, Amber and Brian Ortiz of Manhattan, Kansas, Timothy Frost Jr. of Granite City and Amanda Frost of Mississippi; two great grandchildren, Christopher and August; a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Larry McGill of Vienna, Illinois; nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.

In addition to her beloved husband of 54 years and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Everett Minton and Lowell and Faye Minton and a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Lewis Minton.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be held at the Alto Pass Cemetery in Alto Pass, Illinois from 11:00 a.m. until time of a graveside service at 12:00 noon. Reverend David McGill will officiate.

Judith “Judy” A. Greco, 76, of Granite City, IL, died at 7:14 p.m. Wed. Nov. 19, 2025 at her home surrounded by her family while under hospice care.

She was born Nov. 22, 1948 in Granite City to the late Peggy (Parker) Gieselman and Robert Brazel.

On Sept. 20, 1969, she and Sam Anthony Greco were married in Granite City.  He survives.

Judy received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education from SIU-E and retired in 2010 from teaching 3rd and 5th grades at Wilson Elementary. 

Family was everything to Judy and her love for them brought her joy.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Michelle (Carl Benson) Davis of Granite City, a grandson, Tristan Davis, her step-father, James Gieselman of Troy, IL, 2 sisters, Linda Wade and Annette Keith, both of FL, 2 brothers, Frank and Willie Finazzo, both of Granite City, step-sister, Terri Jo Cook, and step-brother, Larry Gieselman.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jason Paul Greco, 2 brothers, Ed and Fred Finazzo, step-brother, Daryl Gieselman, and her first husband, Michael Poynor.

Jack Lee Messick, 93, of Granite City, IL died on Monday, November 17, 2025 at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon, IL.

He was born on November 5, 1932 in Marysville, KS to Elmer Ray Messick and Ethel Pearl (nee:  Padgett) Messick.

Jack married Elizabeth Ann Tedrick in Vandalia, IL on January 10, 1953.  She preceded him in death.

The U.S. Air Force veteran retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier after 33 years of service.

Jack is survived by a 2 sons:  David Lee (Karen) Messick of Granite City and Michael Joseph Messick of St. Louis, MO; 2 grandchildren:  Michelle Pryor and Sarah (David) Jones; 9 great grandchildren:  Jada Spurgeon, Jayci Jones, Amyah Jones, Blake Jones, Shane Argent,  Taynia Bennett, Marissa Kile, Erykah Craig and Zachery Garrett and 8 great-great grandchildren. 

Besides his wife and parents, Jack is preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Ann Messick; a son, Daniel Allen Messick; a granddaughter, Amy Argent; a brother and sister in law, Delmer Dean & Edith Messick and a sister, Beverly Darlene Vader.

Nelda Joy Lancaster Clutts, 77, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 11:40 a.m. on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at her home.

She was born July 14, 1948, in Dover, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Robert Fitzhugh and Lucille (Whitford) Lancaster.

She retired from Olin Corporation in East Alton after many years of dedicated service as a legal secretary.

She was a longtime faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Granite City. Nelda attended Lindenwood University later in life where she proudly received her Bachelor Degree in Business. She was very artistic and enjoyed painting and working with crafts, enjoyed gardening and had a special love for the Christmas season. She cherished her family and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Michelle Moon of St. Louis, Missouri; James (Nicole) Clutts of Granite City, Illinois and Christina (Matt) Bennett of O’Fallon, Missouri; two grandchildren, Trenton Clutts and Brynliegh Clutts; a brother, Robert (Janet) Lancaster of Nashville, Tennessee; a sister, Jane Jones of Collinsville, Illinois; several nieces and nephews; cousins; other extended family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Lancaster and a brother-in-law, Fred Jones.

Aubrey “Ray” Russell, age 89, of Granite City, Illinois, passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at Stearns Nursing and Rehab Center. Born on April 5, 1936, in Dover, Tennessee, Ray was the cherished son of the late Lee and Leona (Morgan) Russell.

On November 12, 1955, Ray married the love of his life, Evelyn Dean Crismon, in Mississippi. From that day forward, Ray and Evelyn walked through life hand in hand, building a marriage grounded in faith, devotion, and unwavering love. Their beautiful union continued for nearly seventy years until Evelyn’s passing on April 10, 2025. Their reunion in heaven brings comfort to all who knew their remarkable bond.

Ray retired in 2009 from Stein Steel Mill Service, where he worked for many dedicated years as a truck driver. He approached his work with integrity and pride, providing faithfully for his family. A man of deep faith, Ray loved serving the Lord and enjoyed attending various churches throughout the Granite City area. With a natural curiosity and a steady hand, he was a true jack of all trades—never happier than when he was out in his garage, tinkering, turning a wrench, or breathing life back into an old engine.

Ray’s greatest joy, however, was not found in work or hobbies, but in the laughter, presence, and love of his family. His heart was never more full than when surrounded by those he cherished most. He leaves behind a legacy rich in kindness, humility, and the quiet strength of a life well lived.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Evelyn Russell; and his dear children, Bobby Russell, Tammy Myint, and Cynthia “Cindy” Tucker.

He is survived by his devoted son-in-law, Pastor Marvin Tucker, of Granite City, Illinois; and by his treasured grandchildren: Amanda (Michael) Vivod of Granite City, Illinois; Robert (Jennifer) Tucker of Granite City, Illinois; Kassie (Joe) Bettag of Troy, Illinois; Raymond (Stephanie) Myint of Belleville, IL; and Timothy Myint of Granite City, IL. Ray was a proud and loving great-grandfather to Chase Tucker, Carter Vivod, Aiden Vivod, Gavin Vivod, Joey Bettag, Makenna Bettag, Noah Bettag, Jaden (Michael) Beatte, and Nyla Viglasky. He is also survived by his dear brother, Norman (Cindy) Russell of Staunton, Illinois; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever hold his memory close.

A service in celebration of Ray’s life will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, Illinois. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., officiated by his son-in-law, Pastor Marvin Tucker. Ray will be laid to rest during a private interment at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Illinois.


Kimberly Rene Orahood, 56, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 3:12 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at her home.

She was born January 6, 1969, in East St. Louis, Illinois, a daughter of the late Floyd R. and Dana E. (Woodward) Worthen.

She married the love of her life, Robert Allen “Robby” Orahood on October 20, 1990, at Tri City Assembly of God Church and he survives.

She was a faithful member of Granite City Church of God in Granite City and enjoyed coloring, working word search puzzles, playing scrabble and other games. Kimberly will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.

In addition to her beloved husband of 35 years, she is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Rowdy Rossing of East Carondelet and Robyn and Thomas Charter of Mascoutah; a grandson, Nathaniel Charter; sister and brother-in-law, Angela and Lance Fraley of Troy; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Vicki Bruhn of Staunton and Sheri and Charlie Hackethal of Granite City; grandmother, Naomi Thomas of Granite City; many nieces and nephews; dozens of cousins; other extended family and many friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Shawn Worthen.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, November 21, 2025. Reverend Jason Wyman will officiate. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville.

Don Michael Padgett, 80, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 2:31 a.m. on Monday, November 17, 2025, at Evercare of Edwardsville. 

Born August 15, 1945, in Granite City, Illinois, he was the son of the late Leo and Christine (Petrillo) Padgett.

He retired in 2000 from the Granite City School District after over 20 years of dedicated service as a custodian.

The United States Navy veteran proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Granite City American Legion and the Elks Lodge and enjoyed his days of golfing and playing cards. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Missy Padgett of Chesterfield, Indiana; two grandchildren and their spouses, Rebekah and Dillon Simon of Anderson, Indiana and Nicolas and Halie Padgett of Antigo, Wisconsin; two great grandchildren, Lorraine Simon and Benjamin Simon; other extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Dawn Padgett and three great grandchildren, Bennett Simon, James Padgett and Jessie Padgett.

Joe Clayton Luffman 91, of Granite City passed away November 16, 2025 at his home with his wife at his side.  He was born October 30, 1934 in Wrigley, TN to William and Anna (nee: Bannister) Luffman.  He married Shirley Wofford November 9, 1963 in East St. Louis.  

Joe loved carpentry; he enjoyed remodeling the house and working in the garage.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley Luffman of Granite City; six children, Sandy Horn of Belleville, Bobby Joe (Dee Anne) Goodall of Highland, Brenda Goodall (Gene) of Alhambra, David (Debbie) Goodall of Staunton; Christopher (Melissa) Luffman of Urbana and Jeff Luffman of Collinsville; sister, Linda Freeman; thirteen grandchildren, forty great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; eight siblings, Robert Luffman, Elroy Luffman, Minnie Powers, Dolly Reed, Nell Branch, June Thomas, Peachy Howard and Anna Mae Lindsay and a son in law, Richard Horn.

Ray Ted Woll, age 93, of Granite City, Illinois, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on Friday, November 14, 2025, at his home, surrounded by love. Ray was born on May 8, 1932, in Edwardsville, Illinois, the beloved son of the late Herman and Ruth (Trout) Woll.

A proud veteran of the Korean War, Ray faithfully served his country in the United States Army. On April 11, 1952, in Santa Maria, California, he married the love of his life, Norma Jean Lee, and together they built a marriage rooted in faith, devotion, and laughter. They shared 73 beautiful years until Norma’s passing on June 1, 2025—an earthly separation only temporary for two hearts so deeply bonded.

Ray retired on April 28, 1990, after 35 years of dedicated work as a utility man on the hot strip at National Steel, where he was respected for his strong work ethic and steady character.

Guided by his Christian faith, Ray found his greatest joy in serving the Lord, studying his Bible, and attending church. His hands were never idle—he delighted in metal detecting, cross-stitching, cooking unforgettable breakfasts, baking his famous apple pies, and enjoying a lively game of High Rollers dice. Yet above all, Ray was a family man. He cherished every gathering, every story shared, and every moment spent spoiling his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.

Ray will be remembered for his gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and the deep love he poured into everyone blessed to know him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his cherished wife, Norma; his sons, Michael, Larry, and Lanny Woll; his stepfather, Jesse Greer; siblings, Verna Webb-Niehaus, Earl Woll, Betty Likert, and John Woll; his granddaughter, Emily Rozell; and his son-in-law, Charlie Hendrix.

He leaves behind a legacy held close in the hearts of his children, Debra Hendrix of Rolla, Missouri; Gregory (Mary) Woll of Granite City, Illinois; Ricky (Michelle) Woll of Collinsville, Illinois; and Kimberly (Jay) Rice of Sedalia, Missouri.

He was a proud grandfather to 36 grandchildren and was blessed with numerous great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends who will treasure his memory.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 17, 2025, at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, Illinois.

A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, also at Irwin Chapel, with Pastor Cathy Crippen officiating. Ray will be laid to rest beside his beloved Norma at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

Donald E. Kopp, 93, of Glen Carbon, and formerly of Granite City and Edwardsville, Illinois, passed away at 7:56 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

Born on February 29, 1932, in Elvins, Missouri, he was the son of the late Arthur C. and Carrie E. (Russell) Kopp. Donald married the love of his life, Carolyn Sue (Funk) Kopp, on February 7, 1953, in Elvins. They shared nearly 70 years of marriage before her passing on September 17, 2022.

A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Donald faithfully served his country during the Korean War and received several medals and commendations. 

He recently had the privilege of participating in the Honor Flight accompanied by his son-in-law, Mark Clement. Following his military service, he devoted 35 years to the Granite City School District, serving with dedication as both an administrator and a teacher. His commitment to education and his students left a lasting impact on countless lives.

Donald was active in his community and deeply valued service to others. He was a member of the Granite City Masonic Lodge, Ainad Shriners, and the Jesters, and he volunteered for many years with the Shriners Hospital Unit. He also belonged to the Granite City Jaycees and was a longtime member and former deacon of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Granite City.

An avid outdoorsman, Donald loved fishing and hunting, and he especially cherished the many fishing trips he enjoyed in Canada over the years.

He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cindy and Mark Hatscher of Edwardsville, Tracy and Mark Clement of Edwardsville and Carrie Kopp of Edwardsville; three grandchildren and spouses, Casey and Nick Kayser, Dack Hatscher and Joe and Brittanie Clement; two great grandchildren, Dean and Cade Clement; other extended family and friends. In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Bill Kopp.

In celebration of his life, family and friends will join at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. A graveside service and military honors will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children.


Richard E. Mathenia, 72, of Granite City, IL passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at his home.

He was born on April 4, 1953 in Granite City, IL to Robert E. and Anna (nee: Haney) Mathenia.

Richard married Helene Ulitschan in Granite City, IL on September 27, 1975.

The loving husband and father did auto repair for many years.  He enjoyed cars and was a maker of plastic monster models.

Richard is survived by his wife; 2 daughters:  Roxanne Mathenia of Granite City and Nina Marie; 3 sons:  Richard A. Mathenia, Robert J. Mathenia and Randall W. Mathenia, all of Granite City; a brother, Robert (Shari) Mathenia of Granite City; a sister, Rhonda Mathenia of Granite City; a half-brother, Jason Mathenia and an uncle, Dean Haney.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents.

Thomas “Tom” Stanley Gordon Jr., age 89, of Collinsville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Tom was born on March 25, 1936, in Paducah, Kentucky to Tom and Elizabeth Gordon. When he was a young boy, his family relocated to Granite City, Illinois, where he was raised and began building the foundation of a life rooted in faith, family, and hard work.

On June 28, 1958, Tom married Elsie Turski, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Madison, Illinois. Together, they shared sixty-seven beautiful years of marriage.

Tom proudly served his country with honor in the United States Army Reserves.

Tom played a vital role in introducing computer systems at Mercantile Mortgage and later advanced to Vice President of Brentwood Bank, where his leadership and programming skills helped modernize the organization. After retiring from the corporate world, Tom pursued his interest in construction and home renovation. His customers, family, friends, and neighbors valued his attention to detail and his ability to create, repair, and improve just about anything.

Tom was a long-time member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Madison where he lectured, ushered and chaired fundraisers. He also gave generously of his time and talents through his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America (where he proudly served as Scoutmaster), St. Mary’s Credit Union, St. Stanislaus Lodge #1004 and city of Madison.

Tom’s greatest joy was his family. He loved life, laughter, and the simple joy of being surrounded by those he loved most. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and delighted in every story, smile, and milestone they shared. He will forever be remembered for his humor, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family and community.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Elsie Gordon; his dear sister, Sandy Flemming; his loving children, Tom and Janet Gordon of Granite City, IL, Donna and Joel Langenstein of Collinsville, IL, Philip and Julia Gordon of Oxford, NC, and Cathy and Gary Campbell of Collinsville, IL; his cherished grandchildren, Thomas and Ashley Gordon, Erin (Langenstein) Builta and Alex Langenstein, Samuel and Claire Gordon, Zachary and Maurie Campbell; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Natalie, Josie, Max, Theo, Beckett, Scarlett, and Paul. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who will miss him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, George Gordon, Phyllis Boone, and Carolyn (Kasting) Battles.

Regina L. Buecker, 78, of Granite City, IL passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL.

She was born on August 14, 1947 in East St. Louis, IL to William and Thelma (nee: Crone) Fenn.

Regina married Robert Edward Buecker in Belleville, IL on February 7, 1970.  He preceded her in death on October 21, 2025.

The loving mother and grandmother was a member of the Drum & Bugle Corps in the 1960’s.  She enjoyed dancing and helping her husband set up at flea markets.

Regina is survived by a daughter, Rebecca (Joshua) Frizzell of Collinsville; 2 sons:  Robert II (Annette) Buecker  of Belleville and Ronald Buecker of Granite City; 8 grandchildren:  Kenny Buecker, Ryan Raetz, Marissa Earls, Mary Buecker, Stephen Buecker, Jonathan Frizzell, Tyler Frizzell and Starlyn Frizzell and 5 great grandchildren:  Carmen Buecker, Carlie Raetz, Simeon Earls, Alora Frizzell and Joey Corrado. Also surviving are a brother, Timothy Fenn of Belleville; 2 sisters:  Kathleen Mundt of Florissant, MO and Barbara Syzdek of Swansea; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and other extended family members.

Betty Jo Scovill, 80, of Collinsville, Illinois passed away at 3:37 a.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at her daughter’s home in Granite City.

She was born May 29, 1945, in East St. Louis, Illinois, a daughter of the late Frank and Marie (Hooker) Coleson.

She was a devoted homemaker and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family. She was a member of Legacy Revival Center in Collinsville and cherished reading and studying The Bible and also enjoyed word puzzles.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Franklin Scovill Sr. of Collinsville; five children, Kathy Woods of St. Louis, Missouri, Lisa (David) Ray of Granite City, Pam (Mark Sayre) Sage of Washington State, Charles Scovill Jr. of Granite City and Kelly (Josh) Brown of Portland, Oregon; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; other extended family and friends.

Darlene Faye Palovchik, 84, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 2:15 a.m. on Monday, November 10, 2025, at LaBella of Edwardsville.

Born January 27, 1941, in St. Louis, Missouri, she was a daughter of the late William A. and Eula Madean (Grindstaff) King Jr.

She married Donald R. Palovchik on August 30, 1969, and he passed away on June 18, 2003.

Darlene retired in 2007 from U.S. Bank after 42 years of dedicated service as a teller. She was a longtime faithful member of Unity Baptist Church in Granite City and enjoyed many travels with the Granite City Township Seniors.

She also enjoyed her days of reading and bowling and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.

She is survived by a sister, Lelan Hefner of Edwardsville; three nieces, Romona Hefner of Glen Carbon, Rebecca Anderson of Edwardsville and Robin Bainter of Sikeston, Missouri; a nephew, Brady Kent Hefner of Collinsville; a stepdaughter, Tammy Houser of Tennessee; other extended family and friends.

Marilyn V. Buckingham, 63, of Granite City, IL died on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL.

She was born on March 12, 1962 in St. Louis, MO to Roland and Joyce (nee: Williams) Rodgers.

Marilyn married Roger Buckingham and he preceded her in death.

The loving sister enjoyed watching television, especially scary movies.  She also enjoyed coloring, mainly butterflies and she liked to shop and enjoy food.  Marilyn will be missed by everyone including her cats, Tony and Hope.

Marilyn is survived by a brother, Clyde (Janette) Williams of NE; 2 sisters:  Virginia (Don) Oliver of Granite City and Renee (Noukone) Phengsavathdy of Granite City; a step daughter, Shannon (Robert) Gulley of Granite City; a step grandson, Nick Gulley of Granite City; other step grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

Marcia Lynn Prater, 65, of Granite City, IL, died at 8:46 a.m. Fri. Nov. 7, 2025 at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.

She was born Oct. 3, 1960 in Washington Park, IL to the late Robert and Dorothy (Niemeyer) Harrison.

On Oct. 22, 1993, she and Dale W. Prater were married in Edwardsville, IL.  He survives.

Marcia retired from Anderson Hospital dietary department.  She loved to crochet.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by 4 children, Joshua Boyles of Crestwood, MO, and Amanda Lilly, James Lilly, and Jacob Prater of Granite City, 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews, CJ, Brendan, Lindzee, and Jessica.

Debra K. Smick, 64, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at her home on Friday, November 7, 2025.

She was born in Granite City on December 5, 1960.

Debra served many years as a school bus driver with the Granite City School District #9 and was a member of the Amalgamated Transit Union #788. 

She was a dedicated member of Word of Life Church in Granite City and enjoyed her early days of being outdoors and camping. She cherished her cats throughout the years and will be remembered a loving and devoted mother.

She is survived by a son, Joshua Elmore and his girlfriend, Christy Lambert of Madison and her stepmother, Kathy Smick. Debra was the daughter of the late Carl Smick and Sharon (Lewis) Karius and stepdaughter to the late Bill and Carol Karius. Debra was the sister of Todd Karius, Keith Smick, Joe Karius, Scott Karius, Don Hammond, Donnie Meagher, Kenny Meagher and David French, Cindy Karius, Sheila Frailey, Robin Moran, Glenda Cook and Teri Chinn.

Joyce E. Jones, 70, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 8:20 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.

Born October 6, 1955, in Granite City, a daughter of the late Ralph K. Martin Sr. and Ada Mae (Rhodes) Martin.

She married the love of her life, Thomas W. Jones on November 1, 1974, in Granite City and he survives.

Joyce enjoyed her days of gardening and cherished the special times shared with her grandchildren.

Linda Anice Lance, 80, of Granite City, IL, died at 8:35 p.m. Wed. Nov. 5, 2025 at her home.

She was born Sept. 13, 1945 in Newport, AR to the late Mabel Nadine (Layton) and Kenneth Ray West Sr.

On Oct. 27, 1972, she and Jim Lance were married in Granite City.  He preceded her in death in 2001.

Linda had been a Team Leader for CPI, retiring after 30 years.   She was a member of the Church of Christ.  Her grandson, Oliver, became her best buddy in the couple of years.

She is survived by 3 children, David Allen Millsap of Norfolk, VA, Darron (Denise) Keith Millsap of Cuba, MO, and Christina Michelle Scroggins of Sullivan, MO, 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 4 siblings, Kenneth Ray (Sheila) West Jr. of Edmond, OK, David Brian (Gulena) West of Sullivan, MO, Pamela Sue (Dan Digar) Crummitt of Granite City, and Patricia Ann West of Park Hills, MO.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, John Derrick Millsap, a son-in-law, Travis Eugene Scroggins, and a grandson, Jon Michael West.

The family will hold a memorial service at a later date.


Velma L. (Christian) Spicer, 96, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 4:55 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at her home.

She was born on October 10, 1929, in Granite City, the daughter of the late Frank and Julia (Herrick) Nemeth. Velma first married Willis Christian in January 1948 in Granite City; he preceded her in death in January 1957. She later married Harding Spicer on September 1, 1978, at the First Baptist Church in Granite City, and he preceded her in death on March 27, 2007.

Velma worked as a waitress for many years throughout the Granite City area, including 20 years at Gantcheff’s Drug Store. She later joined Nestlé Corporation, where she served as a case packer operator until her retirement in January 1985 after 12 years of dedicated service.

A woman of deep faith, Velma was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church from 1950 until its closure, after which she joined Johnson Road General Baptist Church. She was also an active participant at the Granite City Senior Center, where she cherished time spent with friends and in community activities.

Velma loved camping and traveling with her family, solving word search puzzles, watching television, and caring for her home and loved ones. Her kindness, strong faith, and loving spirit touched all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Larry Christian of Valles Mines, Missouri; two grandchildren, Laura (Gerardo) Gallegos of Houston, Texas, and Seth Christian of Valles Mines, Missouri; her great-grandson, Jordan Robert Perkins of Valles Mines, Missouri; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

In addition to her beloved husbands and parents, Velma was preceded in death by two sisters, Gloria Bennett and Bertha Wasylak, and five half-siblings, Bonnie Fisher, Ella Smith, Alec Nemeth, George Nemeth, and Tony Nemeth.

A celebration of Velma’s life will be held at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, with visitation on Friday, November 7, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., with Reverend Alan David officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.

Memorials may be made to Johnson Road General Baptist Church and will be accepted at the service.


Leslie “Les” DeWayne Chandler, 68, of Granite City, IL, died at 3:36 p.m. Mon. Nov. 3, 2025 at his home.

He was born Oct. 28, 1957 in Granite City to the late Charles Les and Helen B. (Proffer) Chandler.

On Aug. 16, 1980, he and Susan G. Larkins were married in St. Louis, MO.  She preceded him in death Feb. 23, 2021.

Les was a lifelong carpenter and retired from the union.  He was a member of Calvary Life Church and loved to fish.  His favorite pastime was being a grandpa and making memories with his family.

He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Sipes, a son, Brian Chandler, 3 grandchildren: Spencer, Ava, and Brandon, a sister, Nancy Carol Norton, a brother, John (Sandy) Chandler, and a brother-in-law, Clarence Barthelemy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Barthelemy, and 3 brothers: Jeff, and Mike Chandler, and Don Hahs.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at 11:30 a.m. Sat. Nov. 8, 2025 at Wojstrom Funeral Home & Crematory.  Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery on Maryville Rd.
