What Granite City Can Expect

GraniteCityGossip.com, October 13, 2025

As Granite City residents prepare for another Midwest winter, early forecasts suggest a season that’s warmer and drier than usual, with a few surprises tucked into the cold months.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, winter temperatures across the Heartland, including Granite City, are expected to be above normal. While we’ll still see our share of frosty mornings, the coldest periods are likely to hit mid-December, early January, and late January.

December: Mild start, colder mid-month
January: Bookended by cold snaps
February: Slightly warmer than average

Snow lovers may be disappointed because below-average snowfall is predicted for much of Illinois. Granite City could see near-normal accumulation, with the snowiest periods falling in:

Mid-November.
Late January
Early February
Expect fewer major snowstorms, but icy conditions could still pose travel hazards.

Overall, precipitation is forecast to be below normal, which may ease flooding concerns but raise worries about dry soil heading into spring. Rain and sleet may replace snow in several systems, especially during warmer stretches.

With fewer deep freezes expected, this winter may offer a reprieve for local infrastructure and energy costs. Still, residents should remain vigilant:

Check heating systems early
Stock up on essentials before snow events
Watch for ice-related hazards, especially during warm-cold transitions

Spring 2026 is projected to be warmer than normal, with below-average precipitation in northern Illinois and above-average in the south. For Granite City, that could mean an early bloom season and a busy start for local gardeners and outdoor events.

Do you have faith in the almanac’s prediction? Other sources seem to be predicting almost the exact opposite. We suppose we will have to wait and see!
