At Wilson Elementary School fall brings more than crisp air and colorful leaves, it brings the thrill of the Pumpkin Drop, a high-flying experiment that blends science, creativity, and community fun.

Usually held in late October, these events challenge students to design protective systems that allow pumpkins to be dropped from significant heights, sometimes over 50 feet without breaking on impact. From bubble wrap cocoons to parachute rigs and cushioned crates, students put their engineering minds to work, learning firsthand about gravity, impact force, and problem-solving.

But the Pumpkin Drop isn’t just about physics — it’s about celebration. The inaugural event in 2025 was timed to honor National First Responders Day, with local heroes joining the festivities and helping drop the pumpkins to the ground. Their presence added meaning and excitement, reminding students of the bravery and service that keeps their community safe. Students created colorful “Thank You” pages for our local Granite City Fire Fighters that were passed out at the event.

The Wilson Wolf Pack cheered from the sidelines as each pumpkin took flight, rooting for their classmates’ designs and reveling in the spectacle. Whether the pumpkins splattered or survived, the lessons stuck and so did the smiles. And there were lots of smiles!

With its blend of STEM learning, seasonal fun, and civic appreciation, Wilson Elementary’s Pumpkin Drop will become a signature tradition, one that celebrates both the minds and hearts of Granite City’s youngest innovators.
