USPS Delivery Delays Continue as Deep Snow Creates Access Issues Across the City

Following this past weekend’s heavy snowfall, many residents have reported missed mail deliveries in several neighborhoods. While some parts of the city received around 12 inches of snow, others saw even higher totals and deep drifts caused by strong winds pushing loose snow across streets and yards. These conditions have created significant challenges for United States Postal Service carriers trying to safely reach mailboxes and porches.
USPS reminds residents that walkways, steps, and approaches to mailboxes must be kept clear of snow and ice. For curbside delivery, carriers must be able to pull their trucks close enough to reach the mailbox without driving into snow piles or drifts left behind by plows. If a mailbox is blocked or the truck cannot safely approach, carriers are required to pass that address and continue their route.
For city carriers who deliver on foot, the same safety rules apply. Porches, stairs, and sidewalks must be shoveled and free of ice to prevent slips and falls. With the recent snowfall creating uneven surfaces and hidden hazards, carriers cannot dismount and walk through deep snow to reach individual homes.
USPS officials emphasize that these policies are not punitive, they are necessary to protect carriers and keep routes moving during severe winter weather. Residents are encouraged to clear access to their mailboxes as soon as possible so regular delivery can resume.
As temperatures fluctuate and more winter weather is expected, keeping delivery areas accessible will help ensure that mail service returns to normal across the city.
