Trump Blocks Shutdown of Granite City Works Steel Facility

U.S. Steel will continue supplying steel slabs to its Granite City Works facility after President Donald Trump used federal authority to block the planned shutdown. The decision follows U.S. Steel’s earlier announcement to halt slab processing at Granite City by the end of October.

That plan was reversed after Trump enforced the “golden share” provision tied to Nippon Steel’s $15 billion acquisition of U.S. Steel. The golden share gives the U.S. government veto power over strategic decisions affecting domestic steel production.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed that Trump personally intervened to stop the closure. The federal agreement now prohibits U.S. Steel from idling, selling, or closing the Granite City facility until at least 2027.
