Edith C. “Edie” Trindle (née Fischer), 58, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, July 31, 2025. Born on October 19, 1966, in Granite City, she was the cherished daughter of the late Robert Fischer and Thelma (Owens) McDonald.
On June 22, 1996, Edie married the love of her life, William “Billy” Trindle, in Madison, Illinois. Their 29-year marriage was a beautiful testament to enduring love, mutual respect, and unwavering devotion.
Edie had a vibrant spirit and a deep love for the outdoors. Whether she was “glamping” along the Current River, exploring the mountains of Colorado, relaxing on the beaches of Florida, or adventuring in the Dominican Republic, she embraced life with joy and curiosity.
She also had a passion for shopping, especially when it came to finding the perfect pair of shoes, whether she needed them or not. Above all, Edie was a devoted wife, a loving and supportive mother, and a proud, doting grandmother. Her warmth, compassion, and boundless love left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, who will forever be inspired by her kindness, strength, and joyful spirit.
In addition to her parents, Edie was preceded in death by her daughter, Nicole Fischer; her grandson, Owen Barham; her stepfather, Mac McDonald; and her siblings, Margie Harmon, Patty Bolster, and Bobby Fischer.

John Thomas Moylan, 64, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 28, 2025, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Born June 17, 1961, in Jersey City, New Jersey, he was the beloved son of the late John Moylan and June (Ferber) Oliver.
John, a devoted music enthusiast, found endless delight in the timeless melodies of The Beatles. He was a die hard fan of the New York Jets… JETS JETS JETS, and the Chicago Cubs, always cheering on his teams with unwavering spirit.
He found peace and reflection at Low Water, where he would often sit and watch the Mississippi River flow, taking in the beauty and calm of the outdoors.
His generous heart and kind spirit were evident to all who met him, and he was always ready to lend a hand, whether to a friend or a stranger. Above all, John treasured his family. He held a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews, who brought him immense pride and joy. His warmth, humor, and selflessness will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his siblings, Raymond Moylan, Kenneth Moylan, Stephen Moylan, in infancy, and Michael Moylan, and Shirley Bays; his stepfather, Clifford Oliver; and his nephew, Ryan Moylan.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his sisters, Patricia (Patrick) Wolfe and Colleen (Paul) Brennan; his brothers, Thomas Moylan, Mark Moylan, and Daniel (Sharon) Oliver; his stepmother, Ann Moylan; his nieces and nephews, Raymond, Patrick, Jr., Jillian, Summer, Hailey, Johnathan, Hunter, Katlin, Alex, Michael, Ronald, Richard, Leigh Anne and Mikayla; and many other relatives and friends.

Matthew Alan “Matt” Foster, 63, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away at 9:13 p.m. on Monday, July 28, 2025, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Illinois.
Born on January 9, 1962, in Granite City, Matt was the beloved son of John Patrick and Katleen A. (Perry) Foster, who survive. He was a dedicated laborer throughout his career, having worked at Carter Lumber in Granite City, Great Central Lumber in Alton, and most recently with the Metro East Sanitary District.
A lifelong member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City, Matt held a deep appreciation for faith, family, and the outdoors. He found joy in fishing, hunting, and spending time at his Coffeen Lake getaway.
Known for his sense of humor, Matt loved to tell jokes and was always ready with a quip—especially when it came to playfully teasing his nieces and nephews. His warm personality, love for people, and easy laughter left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Matt is survived by his loving sister, Jo Elaine Foster; three brothers, Mark (Kathy) Foster, Pat (Debbie) Foster, and John “Eric” Foster, all of Granite City; cherished nieces and nephews, Stacey, Patrick, Jordan, Sophia, and Madison; a dear great-niece, Lexi; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2606 Washington Avenue, Granite City, with Father Steve Thompson officiating.
Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.

Verna Magdalena Jostes’ earthly journey came to an end on July 27, 2025, at the age of 97.
Verna was born on November 2, 1927, in New Wells, Missouri. At a young age, she moved to St. Louis to live with her godparents. As a teenager, she worked in a factory and helped support her family back home—an early sign of her lifelong generosity and strong work ethic.
She later made her home in the Granite City area, where she lived for most of her life. Many may remember Verna as a retail clerk in local grocery stores.
Verna lived for her family—her daughter, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved cooking, baking, fishing, attending church, and spending time in her garden. She remained active throughout her life, and walking was one of her favorite pastimes—often seen power walking through her neighborhood well into her late eighties.
Church life was always central to Verna. She was a devoted member of Hope Lutheran Church in Granite City, attending faithfully for 72 years.
Verna was previously married twice, including to Tom Masters, and to Clinton Julian, the father of her daughter. Later in life, she was blessed to find lasting love with Jerry, with whom she shared 22 cherished years before his passing in 2023. Verna was blessed with four step children who spent many memories with her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Norma Schuessler, and her siblings: Elsie and Bernice, as well as her stepmother Ester Schuessler and her step-siblings, Helen, Eugene, Garnett.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Polivick Hinton (Tom); grandson John Polivick (Yasmin); granddaughter April Koehler (Roger); great-grandchildren Lincoln and Hunter Polivick, and Ella and Christa Koehler. Also her step-siblings, Cletus, Shirley, and Marilynn.
Services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church, in Granite City, IL on Friday, August 1, 2025. Visitation is at 9:30 am and will continue until the funeral service begins at 11:00 am. A luncheon follows at noon.
A graveside service will be held privately.

Patsy Ann Mulcahy, age 93, of Glen Carbon, IL, and formerly of Granite City, IL, and St. Louis, MO, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at Eden Village in Glen Carbon.
Born on September 28, 1931, in Granite City, IL, Patsy was the beloved daughter of the late Frank and Florence (Carron) Shevcik.
She graduated from Granite City High School and was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where her deep faith first took root and continued to flourish throughout her life.
On her birthday, September 28, 1968, Patsy married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Mulcahy, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Their beautiful union, filled with love and laughter, spanned more than 50 years before Dick’s passing in 2019. Together, they shared a wonderful life in St. Louis for three decades. Patsy worked with pride and purpose in the finance department of the civil service until her well-earned retirement.
Patsy’s life was a reflection of unwavering faith, humility, and quiet grace. She prayed the rosary and read her Bible daily, drawing strength from her spiritual devotion. A lover of nature, she found joy in tending to her garden and flowers, and she was a loyal fan of all things St. Louis sports. Above all, Patsy treasured time with her family and cherished every moment shared with friends and loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her dear husband, Dick; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Elizabeth “Betty” Shevcik, and Ralph and Sharon Shevcik; and her beloved nephew, Kenneth Shevcik.
Patsy is survived by her adoring nieces and nephews: Mary (Rob) Bonham, Janis (Keith) Jensen, Caren (Joseph) Saucier, Carol (John) Tolan, and Timothy (Luan) Shevcik. She also leaves behind many great-nieces and great-nephews, extended family, and countless friends who will remember her warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, IL. A funeral mass in celebration of Patsy’s life will follow at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, with Father Alfred Tumwesigye officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved Dick at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL.

Mary Rose Rotter (neé, Tourse), 79, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at Christian Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Born May 6, 1946, in Springfield, Illinois, she was the beloved daughter of the late Louis and Theresa (Colo) Tourse.
On August 19, 1967, in Granite City, Mary married the love of her life, Ralph W. “Bill” Rotter, Jr.
Their nearly 58 years of marriage were a beautiful reflection of enduring love, partnership, and unwavering devotion.
A woman of deep faith, Mary was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary–St. Mark Catholic Church in Madison, Illinois, where she also served as president of the St. Anne Society. Her faith guided her life and inspired her service to others. Mary’s compassionate spirit shone through in her career as a registered nurse. With a true servant’s heart, she cared for countless patients, friends, and family members throughout her life. She was also a passionate advocate for literacy, volunteering at Frohardt and Prather schools to help young children discover the joy of reading. An exceptional cook, Mary welcomed everyone into her home with warmth, kindness, and a delicious meal, no one ever left her table hungry or without feeling loved. Above all, she was a devoted wife, a loving and supportive mother, and a proud and doting “Gi-Gi” to her grandchildren. Mary’s legacy of kindness, compassion, and care will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Betty Joyce Bolt, age 84, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away on July 8, 2025, in Orlando, Florida, where she had spent her later years surrounded by the love of her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren.
Born on May 29, 1941, in St. Louis, Missouri, she was the cherished daughter of the late Homer Reese and Hedwig (Rygalski) Laird. On March 18, 1960, she married the love of her life, Joseph William Bolt Sr., in East St. Louis, Illinois. They shared 53 beautiful years of marriage until his passing on July 9, 2013.
Betty dedicated 25 years to shaping young minds as an elementary school teacher in the Granite City School District, retiring in 1995. Her commitment to education and her students left a lasting impact on many.
She lived life with joy and independence. Betty loved playing cards with friends, crocheting treasured keepsakes for family, visiting casinos, and exploring the world through travel. A true adventurer at heart, her fearless spirit and tech-savviness kept her always on the go—using her computer for shopping, booking trips, and navigating life with Uber.
Family was the heart of Betty’s world. She created countless cherished memories with her children and grandchildren, filling their lives with warmth, laughter, and love.
She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Darla and Gregg Harrison of Orlando, Florida; her daughter-in-law, Jennifer Bolt of Pontoon Beach, Illinois; four beloved grandchildren, Lauren Bolt, Tyler (DeAnna) Bolt, Blake Harrison, and Austin Harrison; and one treasured great-grandson, Jackson Joseph Bolt. She is also fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by her son, Joseph William Bolt Jr., and three brothers: Richard, Dennis, and Gary Laird.
A celebration of her life will be held at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, on Saturday, August 16, 2025. Beth Kindle, 87, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 11:52 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
She was born on February 4, 1938, in Gary, Indiana, the daughter of the late Rick and Charlene (Barham) Wilburn.
Beth married the love of her life, Phillip N. Kindle, on June 21, 1980, at their home in Granite City. He preceded her in death on August 21, 2023.
Beth retired in 2001 after 25 years of dedicated service in the business office at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Granite City. She was a faithful member of Unity Baptist Church and lived her life with unwavering devotion to Jesus Christ. Her love for music was evident through her years of singing with the Master’s Voice Choir. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, and maintaining her pristine yard.
She gave generously of her time, volunteering for many years with the Brown Rec Pre-school. Beth also took great joy in collecting quilts and Raggedy Ann dolls.
She is survived by her son, Ron (Phuong) Ward of Vietnam; four grandchildren, Melanie Ward of Alton, and Nathaniel “Nat” Ward, Benjamin Ward, and Thomas Ward, all of Vietnam; and four great-grandchildren, Evan Christy, Isabel Christy, Summer Slaton, and Penelope Slaton, all of Alton. She is also survived by her sister, Dianne (Tim Breslin) Killion of Chicago; sister-in-law, Leah Rae Higgins of Gary, Indiana; as well as extended family and many dear friends.
In addition to her beloved husband and parents, Beth was preceded in death by a son, Scott Ward, and her brother, David Wilburn.

Danny Leroy McKee, age 73, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
He was born on August 25, 1951, in Granite City, Illinois, son of the late Raymond J. McKee and Eula “Jean” (Lorrance) McKee. Danny married Connie Higgins in 1970, and they shared 52 years of marriage before her passing in 2022. He was of the Baptist faith.
A beloved son, husband, father, and grandfather, Danny lived a life filled with laughter, curiosity, and devotion to his family.
He had a passion for spending time with his children and grandchildren, shocking people into laughter, tinkering in his garage, and discovering hidden treasures and great deals.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Connie; and a brother, Larry J. McKee.
Danny is survived by his two children, David (Sarah) McKee of Arnold, Missouri, and Cecilia (Daniel) Jamieson of Smithton, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Alexander, Anthony, Elizabeth, Lucas, Merryn, Caitlin, and Michael; two brothers, Ron McKee and Denny (Sherry) McKee; one sister, Judy (Michael) Colbert; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved him dearly.

Peggy Lynn Knowles, 68, and Edward Alan Knowles, 63, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away just one day apart—Edward on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Gateway Regional Medical Center, and Peggy on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Alhambra Care Center.
Their lives were defined by love, laughter, dedication, and the deep bond they shared until the very end. Peggy devoted many years to the healthcare field, always caring and compassionate in her work.
She had a vibrant spirit and an infectious love for life. She treasured her dogs, reveled in family camping adventures, and was a lifelong fan of auto racing—a cherished family tradition. Known for her playful love of the Tasmanian Devil, Peggy brought energy and joy to everyone she encountered.
Edward served as the assistant director of information technology at Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville, where he was respected for his leadership and years of dedicated service. He was also a proud ambassador for Maker’s Mark whiskey, a devoted lover of his dogs, and a passionate baseball fan. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and annual lake trips with his closest friends—always savoring the peace of nature and camaraderie.

Edward Alan Knowles, 63, and Peggy Lynn Knowles, 68, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away just one day apart—Edward on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Gateway Regional Medical Center, and Peggy on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Alhambra Care Center. Their lives were defined by love, laughter, dedication, and the deep bond they shared until the very end.
Edward was born on September 18, 1961, in Granite City, Illinois, the son of the late Victor Clay and Louise Catherine (Huber) Knowles. Peggy was born on August 16, 1956, in Belleville, Illinois, the daughter of Wanda (McBride) Knepper of Branson, Missouri, and the late Arnie Knepper. Edward and Peggy were married on May 29, 2010, in a joyful ceremony at Horner Park in Lebanon, Illinois, and their marriage was a testament to enduring companionship and mutual devotion.
Together, Edward and Peggy built a blended family filled with love. They are survived by their three children, Christopher Baue, Bridgette Miller, and Casey (Philip Brown) Baue, all of Indianapolis, Indiana; many grandchildren; Peggy’s beloved mother, Wanda Knepper of Branson, Missouri; Peggy’s brother, Art Knepper of Fairview Heights; her sister, Tina Knepper of Newport, Tennessee; nephews Reed Knepper and Rick Smith; and a host of extended family and dear friends.
They were preceded in death by Edward’s parents and Peggy’s father, Arnie Knepper.
In celebration of their lives, a memorial visitation will be held at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of a memorial service at 1:00 p.m., with Reverend Sharon Autenreith officiating.

Connie Marie Gerkin, 69, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 2:17 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Stearns Nursing and Rehab in Granite City.
She was born May 2, 1956, in Granite City, a daughter of the late Andrew A. and Mildred R. (Cave) Gerkin.
Connie had worked many years at K-Mart in Granite City and later retired from Wal-Mart in Granite City after many years of dedicated service. She was very artistic and talented and loved working with crafts and making beautiful jewelry.
She loved nature and enjoyed feeding the birds and bunnies at her home. She will be remembered for her gentle and loving spirit and the love and special times shared with her family and friends.
Connie leaves behind her beloved sister, Nancy Gerkin of Granite City; her brother, Mark Gerkin Sr. of Granite City; her nephew, Mark (Brittany) Gerkin Jr. of Pontoon Beach; three great nephews, Logan, Cooper and Wyatt; other extended family and friends.

Christine Elaine Ficker, 55, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 5:26 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Evelyn’s House in Creve Coeur, Missouri.
She was born on December 20, 1969, in Granite City, the beloved daughter of Wes and Carol (Ingram) Doniff of Edwardsville.
On October 2, 1993, Christine married the love of her life, Robert Alan Ficker, in Edwardsville. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories.
Christine dedicated more than 20 years of her professional life as a certified public accountant and business manager at Community School in Ladue, Missouri.
For the past four years, she continued her accounting career with Day & Night Solar in Collinsville. Her work was marked by integrity, commitment, and care for those around her.
Beyond her professional life, Christine had a deep love for music—especially the poetry of song lyrics—and a big heart for greyhound rescue, a cause she supported for many years. One of her greatest joys was spending time at the family’s home at Kentucky Lake, where she cherished countless memories made with family and dear friends. She especially treasured the adventures and laughter shared with the “Big Bear Group” at the lake.
Family was at the center of Christine’s world. Over the past 13 years, she created and hosted FickerFest, a treasured annual tradition that brought together family and friends for food, fun, games, and lasting connection.
Christine is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 33 years, Robert; her loving parents, Wes and Carol Doniff; her children, Bo (Rachel) Ficker of Granite City, and Katie Ficker (fiancé Bryan Mueller) of St. Louis; and her four beloved grandchildren, Luke and Jake Ficker, and Lillee and Addy Mueller. She is also survived by her brother, Mark Doniff of Lake St. Louis, Missouri; her in-laws, Richard and Phyllis Ficker of Granite City; her brother-in-law, Rick (Tina) Ficker of Carpenter; and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends.
She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Steve Ficker.
A memorial gathering celebrating Christine’s life will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2025, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 39660 Maryville Road, Granite City, Illinois.

Rachel Evelyn Lee, 92, of Granite City, IL died on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at Eden Village in Glen Carbon, IL.
She was born on December 21, 1932 in York NE to Aaron P. Petersen and Florence (nee: Mason) Petersen.
Rachel married LaVerne Larsen on January 19, 1952 and he preceded her in death then she married Joe H. Lee on February 14, 1981 in St. Louis, MO and he preceded her in death on August 8, 2016.
Rachel retired from the Granite City Library after 15 or more years of service. She was a long term member of Our Lord’s Lutheran Church in Maryville, IL and a member of the Eastern Star. Rachel loved to read and she was on a bowling league when younger.
The loving mother and grandmother is survived by a son, Erik Larsen of Granite City; a grandson, Erik G. Larsen; 5 step-children and her good friend Kathi Brady.

Jose Refugio Hernandez, 79, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at home surrounded by family. Born October 21, 1945, in El Jaral, Villanueva, Zacateras, Mexico, he was the beloved son of the late Pantaleon and Nicolasa (Lopez) Hernandez.
On November 18, 1972, in Villanueva, Zacatecas, Jose married the love of his life, Enriqueta Pacheco De Hernandez. Their 52 years of marriage stand as a beautiful testament to enduring love, mutual respect, and unwavering devotion.
Jose had a deep connection to the earth and a true gift for gardening—his green thumb was legendary. Whether tending to his vibrant flower beds or cultivating bountiful vegetable gardens, he found joy and purpose in nurturing life. His passion for landscaping extended into his career, where he took pride in bringing natural beauty to homes and communities. A devoted family man, Jose also found joy in coaching his children’s baseball teams in California and their soccer teams in Illinois, always encouraging them with patience and pride. He was a familiar face at Fairmount Racetrack in Fairmont City, where he enjoyed the thrill of the races and the camaraderie of good conversation. Above all, Jose was a man of heart—devoted to his family, proud of his heritage, and generous with his time and love. He will be remembered as a beloved husband, a loving and supportive father, and a proud grandfather. His legacy of hard work, compassion, and deep-rooted love will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sisters and two brothers.

Elliott K. Clark, 78, of Mitchell, Illinois passed away at 5:40 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at his home.
He was born August,18, 1946, in Granite City, Illinois, a son of the late Joseph and Mary Louise (Phillips) Clark.
Elliott married the love of his life, Brenda J. (Shemonia) Clark on May 29, 1965, in St. Louis, Missouri and she survives.
He retired from Arbison in St. Louis after 25 years of dedicated service as a military career counselor. The United States Army veteran proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed his days of hunting and fishing, tending to his yard, feeding his birds and watching westerns.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by three children, Evette (Thomas Paul) Shemwell of Pontoon Beach, Rodney Clark of Granite City and Tina Frasier of Granite City; seven grandchildren, Megan (Jonathan Foster) Thomas, Elliott “Joshua” (Jessica) Clark, Dustin Glasco, Tiffany (Adam McCormick) Shemwell, Cody (Mary Nichols) DePew, Jacob Shemwell and Rhomynn (Antonio Briagas) Frasier; six great grandchildren, Isaac Thomas, Logan Waters, Talon Foster, Landon Clark, Owen Glasco and Sebastian Glasco; two brothers, Modert (Helen) Clark of Dix, Illinois and Gregory (Rose) Clark of Granite City; three sisters, Mary Jo Hutchinson of Granite City, Jackie Brailey of Fairmont City, Illinois and Jody Robertson of Mitchell; many nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.

Arthur “Pete” Fields, 79, of Glen Carbon, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 18, 2025, at home surrounded by family.
Born August 8, 1945, in Granite City, Illinois, he was the beloved son of the late Arthur and Patricia Fields of Venice Illinois.
Pete went to St. Mark’s grade school in Venice and Venice High School where he excelled at baseball, basketball, and track, graduating in 1963.
Pete was drafted by the United States Army in 1966. Prior to starting his military basic training, Pete married the love of his life, Gloria Jean (Ponce) Fields, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Venice, Illinois on a warm winter day on December 26, 1966. Their 58-year marriage was a beautiful testament to enduring love, mutual respect, and unwavering devotion.
Pete served his country with honor in the United States Army 1st Infantry Division (“The Big Red One”) during the Vietnam War from March 1967 to March 1968. Pete’s convoy was attacked during the Tet Offensive in February 1968 killing several of his fellow infantrymen. Pete sustained multiple wounds to the head and body but immediately engaged in a defensive position and put defensive fire to protect the remaining men in his convoy until the attack was repelled and the wounded could be tended to, including himself.
Pete was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart with V-device for Valor for his bravery and sacrifice.
Before being drafted, he attended Murray State University, and following his military service, he earned a degree in Business Administration from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Pete worked as an auditor for AAA Missouri, and as a distributor for Charles Chips in southern Illinois before beginning public service as the Madison County Auditor from 1979 through 1988. Pete ran for United States Congress Representative for the 21st District and narrowly lost to long time congressman Mel Price in 1986 and retired from public service in 1988 after making a 2nd unsuccessful run for the 21st District Representative.
Pete and Gloria then became successful private sector real estate developers, risking all of their savings developing the 60-acre Fields Crossing subdivision of upscale residential homes in Glen Carbon and then the Sherwood on the Lake subdivision, also of Glen Carbon. Both are successful beautiful neighborhoods.
Throughout his life, Pete was known for his friendly demeanor, integrity, work ethic, and deep commitment to family and community. He served as Glen Carbon Rotary Club President providing service to the community and with New Opportunities of Granite City providing resources for adults with developmental disabilities.
Pete had a passion for golf and loved watching baseball and fishing with his grandchildren. Above all, Pete was a devoted family man who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, especially his grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy. Pete will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving and supportive father, a proud grandfather, and a loyal brother. His legacy of kindness, strength, and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his brother, John “Jack” Fields; his sisters-in-law, Cindy (Tom) Fields, Matilda (John) Mannina, Ann (Joe) Graklanoff, Margie (Frank) Greenwald, Josie (Andy) Miofsky, and Dolores (Don) Parente; and his brothers-in-law, Oscar (Sophie) Ponce and Robert (Ina) J. Ponce.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Gloria Jean (Ponce) Fields, of Glen Carbon, Illinois; his sons, Matthew Joseph (Janice) Fields, of Edwardsville, Illinois and Eric (Nicole) Fields, of Glen Carbon, Illinois; his grandchildren, John, Charles, Allyson, Joel, and Nylah; his siblings, Thomas Fields, Mary Ann (Richard) George, and Elizabeth (Rick) Hooks; his sister-in-law, Mary Kay Fields; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lloyd Herbert Jones, 87, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2025, in Granite City, Illinois. Born March 24, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the beloved son of the late Herbert and Mildred (Troemper) Jones.
On April 29, 1961, Lloyd married the love of his life, Susan Marie Rutan, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granite City. Together, they shared 64 beautiful years of marriage, a remarkable journey marked by deep devotion, unwavering support, and enduring love.
A devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Lloyd lived his faith with quiet strength and humility.
He found joy in the simple pleasures of life—spending time outdoors, traveling in his RV, and especially his cherished trips to Lake Shelbyville and visits with family in Texas. Lloyd’s greatest passion was music. A gifted percussionist, he played in numerous bands and church ensembles throughout his life. While classical music was his first love, his musical tastes broadened over the years, to embrace a wide variety of genres, thanks in part to Susan’s influence. His rhythm, both in music and in life, brought harmony to all who knew him. Lloyd will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, and a caring brother. His legacy of music, kindness, and love will continue to resonate in the hearts of those he touched.
In addition to his parents, Lloyd was preceded in death by his sister, Ardeth Jaycox and his longtime friend, Robert Fisher.

James Lee Borden, 60, of Granite City, IL, died at 6:04 p.m. Fri. July 18m 2025 at his home surrounded by his family while under hospice care.
He was born Aug. 7, 1964 in St. Louis, MO to the late William Arvis and Mary Margaret Louise (Wickware) Borden.
James worked various jobs and could do most anything. He also handled apartment maintenance and had been an electronics repairman, fixing TVs and VCRs.
On May 13, 1989, he and Lorrie Louise Irmen were married in St. Louis at the Arch. She survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Madelynn “Maddy” (Pete) Rudloff of Edwardsville, IL, 2 grandchildren, Abigail, and Kayla, 2 sisters, Elizabeth Diane Stotts, and Debra Lynn Flores, 2 brothers, William Arvis Borden Jr., and Ronald Gene Borden, and was the beloved Uncle to numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, as well as a friend to many.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Patricia Ann Borden, and Wanda Jean Borden, and a brother, Timothy Dale Borden.

Richard Leon “Rich” Gosnell, 87, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 8:47 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Evercare of Lebanon.
He was born November 26, 1937, in Granite City, Illinois, a son of the late Otis E. and Gladys (Lowe) Gosnell.
He married Loretta M. (Sutt) Gosnell on July 27, 1957, at the First Assembly of God Church in Granite City and she survives.
Rich retired from Boeing in St. Louis after 42 years of dedicated service in budget and manpower with McDonnell Douglas. He also worked as a tax preparer for 35 years. He was a faithful member of Heritage Church in Granite City and active with I.L.L.M.O. throughout the years.
He enjoyed reading and watching the St. Louis Cardinals baseball and was a collector of model classic cars and NASCAR. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife of nearly 68 years, he is survived by a granddaughter, Jennifer (Daryn) Strong of Granite City; four great grandchildren, Sebastian (Leigha) Sronce of Granite City, Alex Sronce of Granite City, Dylan McMichael of Chicago and Natalee (Luke) Janisch of North Carolina; two great grandchildren, Esme and Scott; numerous nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.

Raymond L. Cloninger, 74, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, at StoneBridge in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
He was born April 22, 1951, in Bernie, Missouri, a son of the late Vernon and Maudie Cloninger and was a sibling of Dorothy, Gene, Pauline and Roy.
He married Nancy Jean (Stroder) Cloninger on April 15, 1972, in Granite City and she passed away on October 16, 2004.
Raymond retired as a steelworker from Laclede Steel in Alton and later as a custodian from Granite City High School. The United States Army veteran proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed his days of fishing and was very talented in carpentry work, remodeling, tinkering and working on cars.
He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Laura Smith of Granite City and Faye Stroder of Chicago; nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.
In addition to beloved wife, parents and siblings, he was preceded in death by a son, Jeremy R. Cloninger and a daughter, Melissa Cloninger.

Matthew R. Stefl, 51, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 1:40 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at his home.
He was born October 20, 1973, in Granite City, Illinois, a son of Brenda “Kathy” (Raub) Fuhrman and the late Steve Stefl.
He had worked 18 years in maintenance with Enter Park in St. Louis. The United States Navy veteran proudly served his country during Desert Storm.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, coached girls softball and an avid fan of NASCAR, Pittsburgh Steelers football and the St. Louis Cardinal. Matt never met a stranger, always ready to tell a story and was the life of the party. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends, enjoyed a day golfing or fishing and enjoyed a cold beer.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Alexis Stefl of Granite City; stepmother, Diana Stefl of Carlyle; sister and brother-in-law, Kristie and Ray Grieve of Highland; two nephews; Justin and Zachary Grieve; his former wife, Liz Stefl of Granite City; numerous step-brothers and step-sisters; many nieces and nephews; his cherished dog, Duke; other extended family and friends.

Marcella Pilcher, 94, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away at 4:46 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at the Cedarhurst Memory Care in Granite City with her family by her side.
She was born August 31, 1930, in Granite City, Illinois, a daughter of the late Ray and Gertrude (Duvall) Tyler.
She married Calvin C. Pilcher on February 23, 1949, and he passed away on July 29, 2012.
She retired from the Granite City School District #9 after many years of dedicated service as a bookkeeper.
Marcella was a member of Reformed Baptist Church in Granite City and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Ahlers of Granite City; granddaughter and her husband, Stacie (Ben) Ritz of Granite City; grandson, Todd (Lori Nelson) Ahlers of Granite City; two great grandchildren, Lauren Ritz and Luke Ritz; other extended family and friends.

James “Jim” Albert Ahner, 86, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family at his daughter’s home in Lascassas, Tennessee.
Born on August 13, 1938, in Bovina, Mississippi, Jim was the beloved son of the late William A. Ahner and Mary Katherine (Barrett) Ahner. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, embodying the values of honor, duty, and devotion.
On June 9, 1962, Jim married the love of his life, Ava Irene Murray, in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Their marriage was a shining example of commitment and unconditional love until Ava’s passing on September 8, 2020. Together, they built a life full of faith, family, and joy.
Jim was a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church in Granite City, where he found deep spiritual fulfillment and community He retired as an electrician from Boeing, where he dedicated many years of his life with unmatched work ethic and integrity.
A true outdoorsman at heart, Jim found joy in hunting, fishing, and working with his hands in woodworking projects. But his greatest passion was his family. A devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Jim’s greatest happiness came from time spent with his loved ones. His warmth, quiet strength, and steadfast love will be forever missed and fondly remembered.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his cherished wife, Ava; his siblings, Anita Nelson, W.D. “Bud” Ahner, F.D. “Butch” Ahner and Margie Scott; and a grandson, Nathan Osborn.

Wayne Elmer Williams, 78, of Granite City, IL, died on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at St Paul’s Senior Community Center in Belleville, IL.
He was born on October 13, 1946 in Granite City, IL to Dewey Edward Williams and Helen (Whitmire) Williams.
Wayne married Karen Townsend in Granite City, IL on November 8, 1969.
The loving husband, father and grandfather retired from the aerospace industry after 40 years of service with McDonnell Douglas/ Boeing.
Wayne was a U.S. Army veteran who received the National Defense Service Medal and Sharpshooter Medal.
He was a member of the machinist’s union and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family.
Wayne is survived by his wife; a daughter, Marcee (Tom) Stegemeier of Granite City; a son, Paul Williams of Belleville; 5 grandchildren: Corey, Samuel, Logan, Aidan and Kolbie; a brother, Gerald Williams of Granite City; 3 sisters: Winnie Pointer of Granite City, Rosetta Kuehnel of Granite City and Wanda Aiken of Granite City and numerous extended family members and friends.

Arline Frances Clark, 84, of St. Ann, MO, formerly of Granite City, died peacefully at 2:00 a.m. Wed. July 9, 2025 in Hospice care.
She was born Aug. 29, 1940 in St. Louis, MO to the late Frank and Arline (Shepard) Noah.
Arline married Buddy Watkins and they were blessed with 5 children: Buddy Watkins Jr., Ricky (Kathy) Watkins all of Granite City, Richard (Cyndy) Watkins of Port Orange, FL, Sheryl Watkins of Bridgeton, MO, and infant, Becky who passed away.
After Buddy’s death, she married Charles Roy Clark and he brought to their marriage: Charlotte (Robert) Schuman of St. Charles, MO, Pam (Raymond) Israel of Edwardsville, IL, Karon (Gary) Harbison of Smithton, IL, Sharon (Douglas) Tearney of Lannon, WI, Sandy Flasher of Granite City, and Douglas (Emily Kroemer) Clark of Mt. Vernon, IA. Charlotte Schuman, Karon Harbison, and Douglas Clark preceded her in death.
Her Watkins grandchildren are Michael (Megan), Christopher (girlfriend: Crystal Parker), Heather, Robbie, and Bryant (Kelly). She also had Ashley (Jim) Beckring, and Kasey (Jake) Dacus and great-grandchildren, Ian, Julian, Xander, Alex, Alyssa, Kyleigh, Jordan, Skyler, Madalynn, and Margo.
Arline was one of six children: sisters, Florence (Kenny) Tipler, Alice (Robert) Sutton, Nina Noah, and Judy Noah all of Granite City, and brother, Allen Noah. Alice and Robert Sutton and Allen Noah preceded her in death.
She was happiest when she could yell, “Bingo” with the ladies in her apartment complex. They only played with quarters, but she was always proud when she won her 50 cents! She loved to be included in activities with the family and enjoyed shopping, eating out and relaxing at home.

With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Eugene Frank Persson, age 60, of Granite City, IL, who left this world on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
Born on April 10, 1965, in Belleville, IL, Eugene was the beloved son of the late Frank and Karen (Malter) Persson. Eugene’s life was a shining example of love, loyalty, and grit.
Eugene worked at CM Memphis as a welder, fabricator and maintenance man in Granite City, IL. Eugene was a true salt-of-the-earth man, known for his tireless work ethic, generous heart, and infectious spirit.
He never met a stranger and was always ready to offer a helping hand, a listening ear, or a warm smile. Gifted with remarkable hands-on skills, he was a talented welder and jack-of-all-trades who could build or fix just about anything. Whether it was cars, motorcycles, or projects. Eugene’s craftsmanship reflected his passion and creativity.
A thrill-seeker at heart, Eugene had a deep love for racing and motorcycles. But his greatest joy came from the time he spent surrounded by friends, co-workers and special ones who considered him as family.
He is survived by his wife, Melanie Joy Persson of Louisville, KY; his children, Jarrid Kyle Persson of Louisville, KY, Reanna Jene Bailey of Corydon, IN, and Melina Jo Persson of Louisville, KY; his sister, Carol (Bill) Elms of Collinsville, IL; his grandchildren, Kylen Persson, Sawyer Bailey, and Willow Bailey; Eugene also leaves behind many extended family members and close friends who were touched by his kindness and generosity.
A celebration of Eugene’s extraordinary life will be held at a later date, where stories will be shared, memories honored, and his legacy remembered.

Richard “Rick” Louis Sbabo, 72, of Granite City passed away at his home July 8, 2025. He was born August 7, 1952 in Granite City to Louis Anthony and Dorothy Belle (Lowe) Sbabo.
He married Antoinette “Toni: Guida April 17, 1976 in Madison, IL. Rick worked as a Senior Turbine Operator at Ameren Electric.
He also was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union in Madison for 25 years. He was an avid bowler.
Rick loved his recliner and enjoyed watching TV especially college football and basketball.
He is survived by his wife Toni Sbabo of Granite City, daughter, Erica (Matt) Harper of St. Jacob and two grandchildren, Mallory and Abigail Harper.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Janet Hazel Blackwell, (neé, Mefford), 77, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Gateway Regional Medical Center. Born November 19, 1947, in Granite City, Illinois, she was the beloved daughter of the late Harold and Lula (Singer) Mefford.
Janet graduated from Granite City High School in 1966. She began her faith journey at Bethel Chapel in Granite City, where she played the organ and taught Sunday School. She continued her devotion at Calvary Life Church. Janet was very creative, enjoying ceramics and excelling as a seamstress, making beautiful dresses and clothes for her family and friends.
She loved the outdoors and camping. Her greatest delight was in the company of her daughters, especially during their cherished shopping trips. Often described as a saint, Janet filled every room with her laughter and song, leaving a unique mark on all who knew her. She will be forever remembered as a beloved mother and grandmother, whose radiant smile brightened her family’s days. Janet’s legacy of compassion, faith, and love will continue to inspire and uplift all who were fortunate enough to share in her life.
In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her daughter, Andrea Blackwell, in infancy; her brother, Phillie Mefford; and her sister, Ruth Laswell.

Gale Garbe, age 85, of Glen Carbon, passed away peacefully with family at his side on July 7, 2025, after a courageous battle with lymphoma.
Born on Nov. 1, 1939 in Effingham, Illinois, to Mabel and Edwin Garbe, Gale graduated from Mattoon High School and Eastern Illinois University, where he lettered in three sports, before getting a post-graduate degree from the University of Illinois.
Garbe went on to become a teacher and coach at Granite City High School, where his 1970 Warriors baseball team finished 26-7 and qualified for the IHSA state tournament. He retired as a teacher after 32 years, all at Granite City.
In retirement, Gale was able to embrace his passion for horse racing by raising and racing thoroughbreds for more than 25 years in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. From his horse farm in Glen Carbon, Gale was a sports fan of the Fighting Illini and Chicago Bears. He enjoyed gardening and loved to share his produce with others.
But Gale’s greatest love was the family he cherished with beloved Mary Lou, his wife of 62 years. Gale was a devoted father and grandfather, attending athletic events, plays and activities along with keeping his competitiveness sharp by creating fun and games for family gatherings.
Gale is survived by wife Mary Lou (Reilly) Garbe, daughters Chris (Greg) Shashack of Edwardsville and Karin (Paul) Taplin of Foristell, Missouri, grandchildren Emily (Evan) Siers, Katie (Garrett) Carmichael, Samantha (Curtis Slisz) Taplin, Ethan Taplin and fiancé Meghan Barnes, Shae Garbe, step-grandchild Farrah (Brian) Taylor, great granddaughter Delaney Siers and many nephews and nieces.
Gale was preceded in death by both parents, son Gary Garbe, brother Garland Kingery and sisters Eleanor Ekstrand, Evelyn Mattis and Marcella Davis.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2025. Funeral service will be held at Irwin Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, with Reverend Sharon Autenrieth officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.

Michael Louis Ireland, 75, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 4, 2025, in Maryville, Illinois. Born July 26, 1949, in Granite City, Illinois, he was the cherished son of the late Silvia “Red” Ireland, Jr. and Nellie E. (Owens) Ireland.
Michael proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Throughout his life, he was a dedicated worker, holding various jobs, including as a skilled meat cutter and as a pipefitter.
He was deeply committed to supporting fellow veterans, volunteering for many years as a life member of the Granite City VFW Post 1300.
Michael lived life on his own terms — strong-willed, proud, and never one to mince words. He enjoyed good beer and good company. Michael’s legacy of service, dedication, and love will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Nevois-Vail.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his son, Shane (Carla) Ireland, of Granite City, Illinois; his daughter, Sara (Keith Linneman) Ireland, of Pheonix, Arizona; his six grandchildren, Amber, Adrianna, Madison, Aubrey, Quinton, and Wesley; and many other relatives and friends.

Linda Lee Minner (neé, Moser), 78, of Collinsville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 7, 2025, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Illinois.
Born April 19, 1947, in Granite City, Illinois, she was the beloved daughter of the late Henry P. Moser, Jr. and Ruth L. (Covington) Moser.
Linda was a devoted member of Harvest Assembly Church in Granite City. Above all, she was a loving mother, dedicating her time and energy to raising her son and treasuring moments spent with family and friends. Her creativity shone through in her love for knitting and crocheting.
Linda’s cheerful and upbeat nature, always accompanied by a smile, made her a joy to be around. She will be fondly remembered as a devoted mother and beloved sister, whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Brenda Kay Schmerbauch, 78, of Pontoon Beach, IL, died Sat. July 5, 2025 at her home.
She was born Jan 3, 1947 in East St. Louis to the late Dorothy Jean (Jenkins) Robertson.
Brenda loved being a seller for Home Interiors for 30 years. She also sold furniture at area furniture stores. She was a private person and loved her cat and little dog.
She is survived by a brother, Daryle Robertson of Belleville, IL a nephew and niece who cared for her, Chris “Cook” and Hannah Quick of Cedar Hill, MO, and nephews, Neil Wayne Quick, and his wife, Stacy of Imperial, MO, and Jordan Gutierrez of Denver, CO.
Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin Marie Schmerbauch Craig, a sister, Susan Marie Quick, and her step-father, Sydney Robertson.

Joseph Michael Rowane, Jr., 67, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in St. Louis, Missouri.
Born on June 6, 1958, in St. Louis, he was the cherished son of the late Joseph M. and Kathleen (McKernon) Rowane, Sr.
On April 17, 1982, in Granite City, Joe married the love of his life, Diana (Tate) Rowane. Their 43 years of marriage were a testament to their unwavering love and devotion.
Joe proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. His service instilled in him a profound sense of strength, bravery, and accomplishment that he carried throughout his life.
A proud firearm owner, Joe enjoyed shooting and teaching his family about gun safety. He found joy in the open road, riding his motorcycle, and taking trips to Sturgis, South Dakota. Joe also cherished the peace and serenity of fishing, spending countless hours by the water with family and friends. Joe was a steadfast supporter of his nieces and nephews, never missing an opportunity to attend their band concerts and sporting events. Larger than life, his presence commanded any room, and he was always the life of the party, eager to share a good time. Joe will be remembered as a beloved husband, a devoted father, an adoring uncle and great-uncle, and a loving brother and friend. His legacy of dedication, compassion, and love will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
