January 2025 Obituaries

Finnley Joseph Bonvicino, 6, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2025, at Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born on October 8, 2018, in Richmond Heights, Missouri, the cherished son of Ashley Nicole Abbott and Joseph Mykl Bonvicino.
Though Finnley’s life was brief, and he did not have the chance to experience life in the traditional sense, his presence touched the hearts of all who knew him. Finnley found joy in the simple pleasures of life: feeling the sun on his face, the wind in his hair, and spending time outdoors. His face would light up at the sound of his family’s sweet voices. Fond memories include swinging, taking walks, camping with family, and enjoying golf cart rides. He delighted in listening to all kinds of music, being read to, and swimming. Bath time was a cherished moment that brought him peace and serenity as he soaked in the tub. Finnley’s legacy is not measured in years but in the love and profound impact he had on those around him. May we honor his spirit by cherishing each moment, as his memory reminds us of life’s fragility and beauty.
He was preceded in death by his maternal great grandparents, Fay and Eva Abbott, Dennis and Charlotte Geier; his paternal great grandparents, Mary Baugus and Debra Krypciak; and his great-great grandmother, Shirley Wise.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his parents, Ashley N. Abbott and Joseph M. Bonvicino, both of Granite City, Illinois; his maternal grandparents, Denise and Wilbert “Wil” Abbott; his paternal grandparents, Michelle and Michael “Mike” Bonvicino; his paternal great grandparents, Joseph Baugus, Larry Coker and Carol and Homer Smith; his aunts and uncles, Austin Bonvicino, Madison Dietz, Alec Bonvicino, and Alyssa Abbott; and many other relatives and family friends.

Thomas Ray Herrin, Jr., 87, peacefully passed from this life at 5:20 p.m., Tuesday, January 21, 2025, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the unwavering love of his family.
Born on February 1, 1937, in West Frankfort, Illinois, Tom was the son of the late Thomas Ray and Sarah (Jones) Herrin, Sr.
A proud graduate of West Frankfort High School’s Class of 1955, Tom built a life rooted in hard work and an unshakable love for his family. He married his soulmate, Cheryl McElyea on December 1, 1962, outside of West Frankfort, beginning a partnership that would span more than six decades. Together, they created a life filled with love, adventure, and resilience, raising their daughters in Granite City and shaping a legacy of family values.
Tom dedicated 43 years to his work as an Aircraft Electrician at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, Missouri, a role he took great pride in. His work fostered his lifelong enthusiasm for airplanes and trains. He transformed his passion into a creative outlet, building an impressive model train collection and crafting a basement retreat where he could indulge in his hobby – a space that became his sanctuary in a house full of girls.
At his core, Tom was a family man, and his love for his wife, daughters, and grandsons defined his life. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family, leading with quiet strength, humility, and boundless generosity. He was a masterful storyteller, captivating those around him with stories that reflected his wisdom, humor, and love for life.
Tom and Cheryl were inseparable. Whether working puzzles together, sharing a quiet moment at home, or embarking on an adventure with their family, they found joy in simply being together. For them, it didn’t matter what they were doing as long as they were by each other’s side. Their bond was a testament to their deep love and enduring commitment, shining brightly through both life’s happiest and most difficult moments.
Their devotion to family was most evident during times of hardship. When their daughter, Raye, faced her battle with cancer, Tom and Cheryl’s love and strength carried them through. They opened their home and hearts to ensure she was surrounded by love in her final days. As Tom’s health declined, Cheryl returned that devotion, remaining steadfastly by his side and ensuring he too could spend his final days at home, surrounded by the family he so deeply loved.
Tom’s grandsons were the light of his life, and he found immense joy in supporting them in everything they did. He wasn’t just a grandpa to them – he became a “bonus” grandpa to their friends as well, always welcoming them with open arms. He was accepting and genuinely invested in their lives, forming connections that made everyone feel special. Tom loved spending time with them, always looking forward to their visits and conversations. Watching his grandsons grow into young men filled him with pride, and his influence will forever be woven into their lives and the lives of those lucky enough to know him.
While his family mourns his passing, they find peace in knowing he is free from pain and reunited with his beloved daughter, Raye.
Tom is survived by his wife, Cheryl Herrin of Granite City; his daughter and son-in-law, Ragina and Richard Wegner II of Watertown, Wisconsin; his four grandsons, Derek (Spencer) Milkovich of St. Louis, Missouri, Devin Milkovich of Marine, Nathan (Katherine) Wegner of Independence, Iowa and Richard (Ashley) Wegner III of Joliet; and countless others who were blessed to know him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Sarah Herrin; His daughter, Rayette Lynn Milkovich; his sister, Brenda Wilkerson; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charley and Wanda McElyea.
Per Tom’s wishes, no services will be held. His family encourages those who loved him to honor his memory by cherishing their families, living with kindness, and finding joy in life’s simple moments – just as he did.

David F. Wiesehan, Sr. passed away in the comfort of his home with family on January 14, 2025. He was 75 years old.
David was a Vietnam Veteran having proudly served in the Army directly after graduating high school. During the 80s, he was a proud and outspoken advocate for POW/MIA throughout Granite City and the surrounding area, educating and informing people of those Americans who were prisoners of war and those who served and never returned home.
After retiring from Granite City Steel at 55, he began remodeling homes. He enjoyed being able to be creative, paint and restore homes for new families.
He loved to go on trips and do a bit of travel. He and his long-time lady friend, Karen, enjoyed many long weekends in Branson, as well as Eureka Springs, New Orleans, Nashville, Memphis and more, with a few cruises along the way. A few years back, he travelled to Alaska with his son and also back to Vietnam with him for his 50-year anniversary of having been there.
An avid hunter and skilled shooter, he loved taking his grandson out deer hunting as well as the seasonal meat shoots.
Fishing was his most favorite pastime, catching bluegill and bass, whether it be at Carlyle Lake, Edwardsville Gun Club with his buddy, Horace, or any of the lakes in between. Fish fry’s were his favorite family gathering and it would be accurate to say that sometimes he would have 10 bags of fish waiting in the freezer to be fried up; complete with KFC coleslaw, pickles, onions and some Bunny bread. Those were some of the most enjoyed nights, simple and easy going, sitting in the garage, nibbling on fish, having a couple beers and solving the world’s problems.
He enjoyed being a part of the Collinsville VFW and the Grafton American Legion and has made manyfriends while being a member.
He loved getting down in the kitchen and always seemed to be making something – like his world’s greatest jambalaya, pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving and Christmas, or sweets like cupcakes (using his special icing tips) or pineapple upside down cake for his contribution to the table at the American Legion’s Queen of Hearts. He said that he never got to try his pineapple upside down cake because by the time he got around to it, it was always already gone. Compliments to the chef!
He loved his family very much and enjoyed spending time with them the most, hosting those fish frys, woodworking, making birdhouses and being creative. Through the years, he made so many things that his kids would request – from shelving units to synthesizer racks and everything in between. He was incredibly talented in this regard. One of his best-selling items at Knotty by Nature was gun shell American flags.
With a great smile and magnetic personality, many people would be drawn to him. Everyone always loved to talk to him. He also had a way of telling jokes in a serious way – you never knew if it was a real story or not and had to wait to see if there was a punchline. He was a fun-loving man.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Lillian (Eugea) Wiesehan and brothers, Harold, Donald and Ed and is survived by his daughter, Patti (Gary) Box, son, David Wiesehan, Jr. grandson, Timothy Jones and granddaughter, Taylor Taake.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 20 between the hours of 4:00-7:00pm with Pastor Brent Johnson officiating the service at 7:00pm.
A private burial will be held with military honors.

Gladys Maxine Henry (nee Okai), did her best for as long as she could. Early on the morning of January 5, 2025, her body faded away, but her light shines on. She was 74.
Our mother overcame a heart attack, a stroke, diabetes, sepsis, a spider bite, and raising three boys mostly on her own. But it was cancer that ultimately took her away from us.
She wasn’t one to complain though she had every reason to. She wasn’t one to let us know how she was really feeling, although we really wanted her to. And she wasn’t one to make anything about her, so I hope she will forgive this obituary. Sorry, Mom.
Gladys Okai was born in 1950 to her parents John and Catherine Okai. She was their second child, following John, her brother. They lived in Madison, IL on Iowa Street, among so many other immigrant families. How a family of four made it work in a house so small was always a point of great wonder to us.
Mom graduated from Madison High School in 1968. She was a good student, played the clarinet, and was a true beauty. Soon after graduating, our grandmother got Mom a bus ticket to Indianapolis so she could to learn computer coding and self-reliance. She succeeded in both.
Our mother and father, Joel Henry, met around that time. Mom and Dad stayed together even after he was drafted and served in Vietnam. They married in 1972, and started a life together.
They brought three children into this world — Brian, Thomas, and Jay. As boys, we were genetically obligated to make dangerous choices, create inordinate amounts of stress, and test the boundaries of parenting. We held up our end of the bargain. So did Mom. A wooden spoon is a great motivator to behave, we came to know.
Mom was generous with her love and patience. She made sure we had baseball gloves and bikes and a backyard to play in. Mothers love you from the moment they know you. Mom did, no questions asked, though there were a fair number of puzzled looks and deep sighs.
When Mom and Dad divorced, we lived with Mom. She started working outside the home and over the next 40 years, she worked in the proof department, managed flood insurance policies, processed loans, and did quality control for several local banks, before spending the last 21 years of her career at First Bank. Her jobs allowed her to travel sometimes, with Seattle and Los Angeles as her favorite stops. She made friends with every person she worked with, save a few who would not stop snapping their gum no matter how many times she asked them to do so.
Mom was a grandmother — Gammy, Grandma Bubbles, and G — to three girls who love her very much. When we see Elise, Sophia, and Natalie, we see our mother and we hear her voice. We also hear Mom chuckling, as she often said that for all the trouble we gave her, the payback was for us to figure out raising girls. They brought our Mom love and light and plenty of dessert. She loved them for who they are and was excited to see what they would become. We will keep you posted, Mom.
No life is without heartbreak and sadness. Our youngest brother Jay died 2018, and because he and Mom were so symbiotic, his passing pained her greatly, though you wouldn’t know it unless you asked again and again. She had a strong and stoic exterior, but her love ran deep. We know that Mom was looking forward to seeing him again to yell at him about something, then they’ll hug.
Our Mom had a tattoo on the back of her neck, enjoyed rocking out to Tool, and was always down for whatever. She also could host a pretend tea party, rock a baby to sleep, and was good with makeup. She could do all that, often simultaneously.
Mom did not want anything and really didn’t need anything either. Her possessions are few. She drove cars until they literally didn’t run anymore, wore clothes until they came back into style, and always traveled light — a week’s worth of vacation clothes could fit in a small duffle bag. We offered her everything, but she wanted nothing.
The past three months have given us moments of extraordinary sadness and amazing joy. We thought she had pneumonia, but it turns out she had lung cancer. “Surprise!,” she said. She did what she could to tolerate chemotherapy and prepare for another round, but her body said no. We celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas in hospital rooms. We marked the new year with her prone in a bed. We slept next to her from Friday into Saturday and ultimately into Sunday. Her breathing shallowed and then stopped. We were ready for it, but also not at all ready.
The good people at Barnes Jewish Hospital, BJC Extended Care, and BJC Hospice were kind, gentle, thoughtful, and wonderfully professional for our mother, even if we were sometimes none of those things. They made her life as good as it could be. We are grateful.
Gladys lives on in her sons, Brian and Thomas, her daughters-in-law, Julia and Jamie, and three granddaughters, Elise, Sophia, and Natalie. Whatever is the most you can miss someone, that is how much we will miss her.
You may want to honor Gladys, and we appreciate it. At her request, she wanted no ceremonies or memorials. For once, we will listen to her. But if you’re so inclined, our ask is a simple one: if your Mom is around, call her right now and tell her you love her; if your Mom has already left you, say a prayer for her and we will too.
