Hummdinger Nation! Granite City’s Hit N Run Faces a Fizzy Future!
GraniteCityGossip.com, October 24, 2025

Granite City’s Hit N Run, located at 4601 Maryville Road, isn’t just a convenience store, it’s a cultural landmark. For decades, locals have lined up in the drive-thru, not just for snacks, bread, or milk, but for the crown jewel of carbonated beverages, the Hummdinger Pepsi. Syrupy, icy, and served with love, it’s the drink that launched a thousand cars and probably a few arguments over who gets the last sip.
But change is bubbling up, as the owners of Hit N Run are making strategic adjustments to their business model. While all stores will remain open, beginning November 1 they are retiring their drive-thru services, including at the beloved Granite City store.
Yes, you read that right. The line that once snaked around the building like a parade of caffeine addicts will soon be history. Customers will now have to (gasp) go inside and make their own dang drinks. No more whispering “Can you add a shot of cherry in mine?” No more rolling down the window and being greeted by someone who knows your order better than your spouse.
What makes this location truly special isn’t just the drink—it’s the people. The familiar faces behind the counter have become part of the daily rhythm of life in Granite City. They’ve seen generations grow up, they ask about your families, memorized countless orders, and offered smiles that feel more like family reunions than retail transactions.
It’s a building with a history. Before it was the home of the Hummdinger, this spot was W&W Confectionary in the 1960s, a candy store where kids could spend their allowance on jawbreakers and dreams. Later, it became a meat market, serving up fresh cuts and neighborhood gossip. Today, it’s the only place where two simple words, “Hummdinger, please.” is practically a love language.
As the business evolves, the owners have made it clear: protecting jobs is a top priority. That means the Granite City team—those beloved beverage whisperers will still be there, even if the drive-thru isn’t.
Raise your cup (even if you poured it yourself) ….so, here’s to the Hummdinger. To the syrupy perfection. To the drive-thru that was more like a community gathering. And most of all, to the Granite City crew who made it all feel like home.
Change might be coming, but the heart of Hit N Run still beats strong—one fizzy cup at a time.
