Help Is Here! Madison County Launches Energy Assistance Program Starting October 1
GraniteCityGossiip.com, September 15, 2025

As cooler weather approaches, Madison County Community Development is stepping up to support residents with rising energy costs. Beginning October 1, 2025, applications will open for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a vital resource for households struggling to keep the heat and lights on.
This year’s program offers expanded eligibility and multiple forms of support, including help with natural gas, propane, electric bills, and even furnace repairs for inoperable heating systems.
October 1, 2025 – Applications open for priority groups: Adults aged 60+, individuals with disabilities, families with children under 6 and households facing utility disconnection or low propane levels
November 1, 2025 – All other income-eligible households may apply
Applications accepted through August 15, 2026, or until funds run out
Households must be at or below 60% of the state median income.
One-time benefits are available, with options to return for Reconnection Assistance or Furnace Assistance if needed.
Propane customers are encouraged to apply early to maximize their benefits before winter price hikes.
What You’ll Need to Apply:
Proof of income for the past 30 days
Social Security or Taxpayer ID numbers (or guidance if unavailable)
Current heat and electric bills
Lease/rental agreement if heating costs are included in rent
Additional documents may be required based on household situation
Due to high demand, applications will not be mailed. Residents must call intake locations to schedule an appointment.
