GRANITE CITY, IL – A new and lasting symbol of unity, creativity and hometown pride now stands in Wilson Park, where the Granite City Area Chamber of Commerce and the Granite City Park District have unveiled the “Community Love” mosaic mural in celebration of America’s 250th Birthday.
Located near the entrance to Wilson Park off 27th Street, the colorful mural is more than a new piece of public art. It is a reflection of the people who helped create it, one tile at a time.
The project was completed in time for the July 2, 2026, unveiling, just ahead of Granite City’s long-standing Patriots in the Park celebration. The finished mural now serves as a permanent reminder of what can happen when residents, businesses, organizations, volunteers and local leaders come together with a shared purpose.
The idea for the project began with Granite City Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jenna DeYong, who wanted to create something meaningful to complement Patriots in the Park while also leaving behind something the community could enjoy for years to come.

“Patriots in the Park has been bringing families together for generations,” DeYong said. “I wanted to build on that tradition by creating something that would remain long after the celebration ended; a piece of public art that reflects the heart of our community and reminds future generations what can happen when people work together.”
Over the course of several weeks, hundreds of community members, businesses, civic organizations and families painted individual ceramic tiles. Each tile carried its own personality, design and meaning. Once brought together, those individual pieces became one larger work of art, symbolizing the way each person contributes to the strength and character of the community.
Bringing the mural to life also required plenty of hands-on work behind the scenes. Granite City Park District Superintendent Bradley Boone, along with park district employees Aiden Harris and Tyler Lakin, challenged the blistering summer heat as they worked to assemble the project and transform the painted tiles into a finished wall of art. Their effort helped turn a community idea into a permanent feature of Wilson Park.
The mural, appropriately titled “Community Love,” embodies the spirit of collaboration, volunteerism and civic pride that has long been part of Granite City’s story. The project was made possible through a partnership between the Granite City Area Chamber of Commerce and the Granite City Park District, with support from the City of Granite City, local sponsors and volunteers who contributed their time, resources and creativity.
Placed in Wilson Park before the Patriots in the Park festivities, the mural offers a fitting tribute to America’s Semiquincentennial. It honors not only the nation’s 250-year history, but also the people who continue to build stronger communities through service, partnership and pride in their hometown.
As visitors walk through Wilson Park in the years ahead, the “Community Love” mural will stand as a colorful reminder that Granite City’s greatest strength has always been its people.
Whether viewed as a work of art, a community project or a symbol of patriotism, the mural tells a story that reaches far beyond its individual tiles. It tells the story of a community that chose to celebrate America’s milestone anniversary by creating something lasting together.
