Law enforcement is warning residents about a growing crime trend called bank jugging, where thieves target individuals after they withdraw cash from banks, ATMs, or check-cashing locations. These criminals often linger near financial institutions, watching for signs that someone may be carrying money. But it’s not just what they see, it’s what they hear.

Overheard cell phone conversations in public places can unknowingly reveal sensitive information, such as:

I just pulled out rent money.”
I’m heading to the bank now.”
I’ve got cash for the bill.”

Such remarks can tip off would-be perpetrators, who may then follow the victim to another location like a store, gas station, or even home and strike when the person is distracted or alone.

How to Protect Yourself:

Keep banking details private — avoid discussing cash withdrawals in public or on speakerphone.
Be aware of your surroundings at banks, ATMs, and parking lots.
Conceal cash immediately; don’t display envelopes or bank bags.
Vary your banking routines and routes.
If you suspect you’re being followed, drive to a police station or busy public place.
Lock your car doors immediately after entering and keep valuables out of sight.

This crime has been reported in cities and small towns alike. Let’s protect our community by staying alert and spreading awareness. If you witness suspicious behavior near banks or ATMs, report it to local law enforcement.
