Frances Burns, June 2, 1930 – March 19, 2025
With heavy hearts we share the passing of Frances Burns, a woman of remarkable strength and resilience, who passed away on March 19, 2025, at the age of 94. Born in Chicago, she faced life’s many challenges with grace and boundless courage.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Athena (Papadatos) Haikalis; her beloved husband, Charles A. “Chuck” Burns; her daughter, Kathy Burns; and her siblings, Mary, Kay, and Diane.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Thomas Burns, Kevin Burns, and Bryan (Roxann) Burns; her grandchildren, Angie (Darryl) Hamel, Matthew Burns, and Joshua (Megan) Burns; her great grandchildren, Austin and Lily; her siblings, Goldie Rossi, Gloria Pollys, and Helen Souris; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
As a teenager in the 1940s, Fran enjoyed playing with her six sisters, bicycling and roller skating around their neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Not one to shy from work, she began selling candy and confections at the Chicago Train Station at an early age. Little did she know that shortly after World War II, she’d meet the love of her life while waiting at a bus stop on her way to work.
Newly discharged from the Army, Chuck opened the door of his CTA bus for a young Frances who would return to the stop every day for the next few months, beginning a love affair that would endure for another sixty-four years. Fran was known for her unwavering love and support for her husband, always ready with a cold Budweiser, Old Style or Coors, a fresh pack of Marlboros and the latest horse race scratch-sheet. They shared a fondness for gambling, often hosting Penny-Anty card games until wee hours of the morning in the smoke-filled dining room of their red-brick bungalow.
Later, she found great passion in her new position as machine operator at Wrigley’s Gum factory, where she garnered acclaim for her numerous “high-run” awards. She also found joy gardening, cooking holiday meals and traveling to Greece whenever she could.
While out-and-about, Fran was easy to spot because of her affection for unique hairstyles of the times. Her famous three-layer beehive helped her children locate her in stores by looking for the “periscope” of hair over the tops of even the tallest shelves.
When Frances fell ill, family, friends and neighbors assisted with meals, rides to medical appointments
and visits. She cherished time with her granddaughter, Angie, and found comfort whenever surrounded by conversation, laughter or the re-telling of old stories with her beloved daughter, Kathy.
Even at the end she found a way to smile and laugh with the caring staff at Cedarhurst of Granite City memory care facility and the extraordinary nurses from Hospice of Southern Illinois, Jeanie and Sarah.
“Frances, may your tired soul find eternal rest.”
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, INC.
A family celebration of life will be held for Frances from 5:00 to 6:00PM on Tuesday, 25 March, 2025 at Irwin Chapel Funeral Home located at 3960 Maryville Rd, Granite City, IL 62040 with burial at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Robert Lee Stanton, 88, of Granite City, Illinois, peacefully departed this world on Monday, March 3, 2025, at Cedarhurst Senior Living Community, Granite City.
Born on August 10, 1936, in Pinckneyville, IL, he was the youngest son of the late Mark Ray Stanton and Mabel Irene (Ballheimer) Stanton.
He married the love of his life, Janice Louise (Welshan) Stanton on August 17, 1957, in Granite City and she survives.
“Bobby Joe”, as he was affectingly known by most, embodied the principle of Faith, Family, and Friends. He believed that is where true happiness began and he lived his life guided by that conviction.
He was a man of unwavering devotion, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Granite City, Illinois. Bobby Joe was steadfast in his daily scripture reading and persistent in introducing all he met to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His childhood years were spent in a small house on a farm in the country where he spent many cheerful days fishing, swimming and hunting with his four older brothers and protected by one older sister. He moved to Granite City at the age of eighteen looking for work and started a career lasting 45 years as a pipefitter at Granite City Steel. Following his tenure at Granite City Steel, he gave tours of the plant. He also dabbled in real estate. Bobby Joe also had a second career in retirement, spending 18 years at Irwin Chapel Funeral Home. He and Janice raised two children, cheered on four grandchildren in their many activities and doted on seven great grandchildren, with the eighth due any day. He found immense joy in visiting with his many nieces and nephews, and their children, all of whom warmly referred to him as “Uncle Bob” or “Uncle Robert.” Bobby Joe formed numerous lifelong friendships through the years with coworkers, neighbors, and church family, as well as short, one time friendships with anyone he met.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings and their spouses; Mabel Stanton Chell, John and Joanne Stanton, Richard and Marjorie Stanton, Mark and Norma Stanton, Roger Stanton and his daughter in law, Connie (Blaha) Stanton.
In addition to his beloved wife of over 67 years, he is survived by his daughter and her husband, Robin and Kenny Clark, and his son, Daniel Stanton, his grandchildren, Sarah Fernandez and her husband Jason Fernandez, Rachel Clark and her husband Yordanis Doallo Crespo, Allyson Stanton and her wife Stephanie Wittman, Andrew Stanton and his wife Abby Stanton, his great grandchildren Lydia Fernandez, Cameron Fernandez, Rylee Stanton, Brooks Stanton, Remi Stanton, James “Witt” Stanton, Lane Stanton, and Corrine Doallo Clark.
