When I see people around Granite City, they often ask me how “Billie’s Kids Christmas” started and keeps going after so many years. It was founded by volunteer women of the Tri-Cities Area Chamber of Commerce and continues in the name of the individual who began this worthy endeavor, my mom, Billie Schuler. The program began with 50 children, from Granite City, Madison and Venice and has now grown to serving over 550 children and their families. The Schuler family, along with an army of volunteers, picked it up in 2010 to continue to this day.
One of the most important aspects of life is to be fortunate enough to have a loving, caring and fun family, even more special is being part of a big family. I was extremely blessed to be a member of such a wonderful family and a child of Billie and Paul Schuler. Together they had seven children, and we were taught, from an early age, “Service above Self,” as we traveled the Tri-Cities area delivering food and clothing to many in need in the community. Our parents had us working every holiday season to provide meals, gifts, and whatever any less fortunate people needed.

What makes this anniversary airing particularly special is that it will feature an extended version, including scenes that are usually cut from the regular broadcasts. This means fans will get to enjoy even more of Rudolph’s magical journey to the Island of Misfit Toys, his encounter with the Abominable Snowman, and his triumphant return to save Christmas.
The extended version promises to bring back the nostalgia of childhood memories while offering something new for both longtime fans and first-time viewers. So, gather your family, grab some hot cocoa, and tune in to NBC on December 6th to enjoy this timeless tale of acceptance, bravery, and holiday cheer.

The gardening season is coming to an end for the tiny garden at the Old Six Mile Historical Society, and a few vegetables and tomatoes still remain for anyone who would like to stop by and collect them. This year’s garden was a smaller, personal project in contrast to the large community gardens of years past. The Old Six Mile Historical Society is always looking for volunteers and members to join in their efforts to preserve history and promote community through volunteer-supported events, horticulture, and storytelling. Those interested in getting involved are encouraged to visit the property at 3279 Maryville Rd in Granite City, IL to pick up a membership application.
