Judge grants Clerk Andreas\u2019 request for recount of votes for two referenda <\/strong>

Edwardsville, IL \u2013 A judge on Friday granted Madison County Clerk Linda Andreas\u2019 request for a recount of votes cast in two referenda that were on the ballot for the Primary Election.

Andreas made the request for the recount after voters alerted her to apparent inaccuracies for the vote totals for two referenda questions involving Long Lake Fire Protection District. In the Unofficial Results on election night, one of the ballot questions received 383 \u201cyes\u201d votes and 2 \u201cno\u201d votes. The other ballot question received 327 \u201cyes\u201d votes and zero \u201cno\u201d votes.

Andreas said the lopsided results Tuesday caused her to suspect an inaccuracy. In addition, voters in the district contacted the Clerk\u2019s Office with similar concerns. A subsequent review showed that a formatting issue with the ballot caused an inaccurate count.

\u201cI\u2019m thankful that voters contacted us, confirming our concerns. With the information they gave us, we were able to conduct a review and gather the information we submitted to the judge, who promptly granted our request on Friday\u201d, Andreas said. \u201cI\u2019m grateful for Judge Foster\u2019s careful review of our request, which will allow a recount for these two referenda and ensure that every vote is counted.\u201d

Associate Judge Ronald Foster\u2019s order authorizes a hand count of the ballots, conducted by election judges from both political parties. The recount covers only the votes cast for the two referenda questions.

\u201cA hand count of the paper ballots will ensure complete and accurate results,\u201d Andreas said. \u201cMoments like this remind us why paper ballots are important. They give us a verifiable, durable record that protects every voter\u2019s voice.\u201d

The recount will take place next week. As of Friday afternoon, the time and location had not yet been f finalized. The Clerk\u2019s Office expects to have results by the following day.

The Clerk noted that the ballots of individual voters remain confidential during the recount process\u2014 there\u2019s no way to determine which way a specific individual voted.

Andreas said her office\u2019s review indicates that the formatting issue was isolated to the Long Lake Fire Protection District results.

\u201cI commend the staff of the Clerk\u2019s Office,\u201d Andreas said. \u201cThanks to their diligence, we were able to identify the issue and present information that the Court relied on to promptly grant our recount request. The recount will give the public full confidence in the final results.\u201d

She added: \u201cMy office is committed to upholding the integrity of every election we administer. Protecting the accuracy, security and transparency of the process is central to our mission.
