The FCC is gearing up for a vote that could finally address one of the biggest frustrations American consumers deal with: calling a U.S. company and ending up talking to someone halfway around the world. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced a proposal that pushes telecom companies to bring more call\u2011center jobs back to the United States, raise communication standards for the centers that stay overseas, and crack down harder on foreign networks that pump illegal robocalls into the country.

For years, Americans have been routed to offshore call centers for almost everything such as confirming a charge with a local bank, fixing a billing error, resetting a password, even ordering a pizza. People aren\u2019t imagining the frustration. When callers can\u2019t understand the representative, when the answers feel scripted or unclear, or when the conversation drags on because of language barriers, customers walk away feeling like they didn\u2019t get the service they deserved from a company they trusted.

Carr\u2019s proposal doesn\u2019t ban overseas call centers, but it does put new expectations on the table. The FCC is considering incentives to bring jobs back home, along with a requirement that overseas call\u2011takers serving U.S. customers be proficient in Standard American English, a move aimed at reducing miscommunication and improving service quality. The Commission is also weighing whether countries tied to high volumes of illegal robocalls should face targeted tariffs or financial bonds, putting pressure on foreign networks that enable scam operations.

These ideas only apply to businesses regulated by the FCC, mainly telecom companies, and nothing is final yet. The proposals must go through the full rulemaking process, including public comment, before any changes take effect. But the message behind the move is clear: Americans are tired of feeling like second\u2011class customers when they call a company based in their own country.

The FCC is expected to vote later this month.
