Madison County honors Alton Pastor as Living Legend<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Madison County officials recognized an Alton pastor Wednesday night as a \u201cLiving Legend\u201d for her lifetime of ministry, mentorship and leadership in the community.

County Board Member Michael \u201cDoc\u201d Holliday of Alton and Chairman Chris Slusser presented Pastor Joyce Elliott with the Madison County Living Legend Award during the County Board\u2019s February meeting.
\u00a0
Elliott made history as the first female licensed ordained minister at Union Baptist Church in Alton \u2014 the oldest African American church in Illinois \u2014 where she has served in ministry for more than two decades.
\u00a0
Holliday, who nominated Elliott for recognition, said her impact reaches far beyond the walls of the church through years of outreach, advocacy and service to families across the region.
\u00a0
\u201cPastor Elliott\u2019s leadership has touched countless lives throughout Madison County,\u201d Holliday said. \u201cHer commitment to uplifting others through faith, education and community involvement reflects the very spirit of what it means to be a Living Legend.\u201d

In her remarks, Elliott reflected on her journey in ministry and encouraged those in attendance to remain willing to get involved in their communities, regardless of background or circumstance. She also spoke about her passion for educating young people on American and African American history, including her seven-year radio program on WBGZ that highlighted historical contributions and inspired students across Madison County.

\u201cRegardless of who you are or where you come from, God has a role for you,\u201d Elliott said. \u201cWe may not know the outcome, but all we have to do is be willing to get involved.\u201d

In addition to her work in ministry, Elliott has remained active in mentoring youth, supporting local initiatives and working alongside community organizations dedicated to improving quality of life throughout Alton and surrounding communities.

Slusser said the annual Living Legend Award recognizes individuals whose contributions create a lasting and meaningful impact on Madison County residents.

\u201cPastor Elliott\u2019s lifelong dedication to serving others and strengthening her community through faith and leadership makes her truly deserving of this recognition,\u201d Slusser said.

The Madison County Living Legend Award is presented annually to residents whose work and service continue to inspire future generations through a legacy of leadership, compassion and commitment to community.
