Since its founding in March 1972, the Granite City Association for the Protection of Animals (APA), located at 5247 Canham Road, has served as a beacon of compassion for homeless and abandoned pets in our community. It began with just a few passionate volunteers and has grown into a full-fledged no-kill shelter built entirely through grassroots fundraising — without relying on city, county, state, or federal funding.
Today, the APA offers far more than cages and kibble. Animals enjoy toys, open spaces, and even though it’s nice and cool inside, swimming pools during the summer months to keep them happy while playing outside. Dogs are walked daily and given plenty of affection, while cats and kittens stretch out in their own rooms including a screened-in room designed for rest and relaxation and for a full view of visitors, volunteers and workers. Each animal receives full vaccinations, microchipping, spay/neuter procedures, and testing for critical conditions like heartworm, FIV, and FeLV — ensuring they’re as healthy as they are loved.
You don’t have to visit in person to make a difference at our local APA. Their APA’s Amazon Wishlist makes it easy to support the shelter from your phone or computer. With just a few clicks, you can send pet food, cleaning supplies, treats, and more directly to the animals who need them most. Click here to view their Wishlist, Amazon.com — every donation, big or small, helps give these pets a better life.
The APA also thrives on community involvement, with Trivia Nights and Taco Sale Fundraisers as two of its most beloved events. These gatherings not only raise critical funds, but they also bring people together to share laughs, stories, and a common cause — caring for animals in need.
And if you’re looking to get even more hands-on, the shelter always welcomes volunteers. Whether you’re walking dogs, lending a hand with maintenance tasks, or simply sitting with a shy animal who needs a little extra love, your time and presence make a lasting impact. No experience is necessary — just a caring heart and a little bit of time.
Whether you’re shopping their wishlist, attending a fundraiser, or donating your time, supporting the APA means helping build a more compassionate Granite City — one paw at a time.
