Structure Fire Displaces Residents on Old Alton Road with No Injuries Reported

On Saturday, January 17, 2026, at approximately 14:38 hours, the Mitchell Fire Department responded to the 6100 block of Old Alton Road for a reported structure fire at a private residence. Engine Units #1121, #1122, and #1124, along with Chief #1100, Chief #1101, and Chief #1102, arrived to find heavy smoke and active fire coming from the home.

Due to the rapid progression of the incident, a First Alarm was immediately struck as the fire spread into a fully involved attached garage. Multiple neighboring agencies responded to assist, including:

Long Lake Volunteer Fire Department
South Roxana Fire Department
Madison County Emergency Management Agency
RuralMed–Metro East

Long Lake personnel assisted with rolling and hauling frozen handlines and supply hoses from the scene back to the stations. Madison County EMA personnel also assisted with re‑racking hoses before clearing coverage.

Fire crews successfully brought the blaze under control, and the fire was extinguished without incident. No injuries were reported.

The residents of the home have been displaced as a result of the damage and are receiving assistance through the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.
