Granite City drivers will soon see a new layer of traffic enforcement at a busy local intersection. The City Council has officially approved the installation of red-light cameras at Maryville Road and Pontoon Road, a move aimed at improving safety and reducing violations.

The cameras will monitor all four directions of the intersection, capturing vehicles that run red lights. According to the Granite City Police Department, the enforcement period will begin with a grace phase: from now through January 19, violators will receive a warning notice mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Starting January 20, however, the system will shift to full enforcement. Any vehicle caught running a red light will result in a citation being sent to the registered owner.

City officials say the decision was driven by concerns over frequent violations and near-miss accidents at the intersection. The camera system is expected to act as both a deterrent and a tool for accountability.
