May 2023 Obituaries

Elizabeth Ann Lampitt, February 4, 1940 – May 30, 2023 Granite City, Illinois – Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Lampitt, 83, of Granite City, IL passed away at home peacefully in her sleep at 8:35 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2023.

Betty was born “Lisabetta Anna” on February 4, 1940 in Wilmington, DE to Dornino and Lucy Ciabattoni. She married Arthur F. Lampitt, Sr. of Pekin, IL on April 24, 1965 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Peoria, IL.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, and their four sons: Arthur, Jr, Edwin (Claire), Andrew (Lynne), and Fr. Robert; nine grandchildren; many cousins; several nieces and nephews; and numerous godchildren.
She was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren, Benjamin and Josephine, as well as her siblings, Joanna (“Jen”), Guerino (“Bill”), Teresa (“Theresa”), Josephine (“Jo”), and Dornino (“John”).
Betty was most recently a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Granite City but was an active member at several others throughout her life including St. Anthony’s in Wilmington, St. Joseph’s in Pekin, St. Monica’s in East Peoria, St. Mark’s in Peoria, and Holy Family in Granite City. At various times she sang in the choir, lectored, was an active online and phone “prayer warrior”, distributed Holy Communion at Mass and to shut-ins, and even helped clean the church. It was her deep faith that sustained her through the ups and downs of life.

As a young woman she moved from Wilmington to Peoria where two siblings had already moved. Raised as a city girl, she loved the lush, green countryside of Illinois. Soon she met and married Art and loved being a wife and mother tending to her family’s needs. Betty never forgot her roots and was very proud of her Italian heritage. She especially enjoyed serving up homemade spaghetti and meatballs punctuated by a sauce of her sister’s recipe.

Later, having moved with her family from Peoria to Granite City, Betty worked in downtown St. Louis as a secretary and loved doing so. She was well organized and a great improviser, possessing all the necessary skills including the ability to write masterfully with proper grammar and spelling, type quickly and to write shorthand, a skill she never forgot. She enjoyed her daily bus rides across the Mississippi River because they afforded both friendship and opportunities to share her faith.

Betty was a very social and communicative person. She enjoyed keeping in touch with friends and family via email, phone calls, and especially greeting cards. Once you were in her life, she never forgot you – or your birthday.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 5th at St. Monica’s Catholic Church in East Peoria from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with a funeral mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. Her son, Fr. Robert Lampitt, will officiate and burial will follow at Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria.

To express your love for Betty, please have a Mass said for the repose of her soul or of another faithful departed or make a memorial donation to the Children’s Gaucher Research Fund which seeks a cure for the disease that took her granddaughter: 8110 Warren Court, Granite Bay, CA 95746.
