Massive Sinkhole Opens Beneath I‑70 Near the Dome, Inspectors Assess Structural Risk

A large sinkhole has opened beneath Interstate 70 at Broadway near the Edward Jones Dome in downtown St. Louis, creating a potentially dangerous situation directly under one of the region’s busiest elevated highways.

New images from the scene show a deep collapse in the ground below the overpass, with soil washed out and pavement broken away. Several of the highway’s support columns now sit at the very edge of the sinkhole, and cracking is visible in the surrounding concrete, a clear sign that the ground supporting the structure has been compromised.

Bridge inspectors and emergency crews are on site evaluating whether the stability of the interstate has been affected. The area beneath the overpass has been secured, but traffic continues to move overhead, leaving most drivers completely unaware of the developing situation below.

Officials have not yet announced lane closures or detours, but the assessment is ongoing and the situation may change quickly. This is still a developing story.
