Granite City will once again honor its proud labor heritage with the 2025 Labor Day Parade, held on Monday, September 1st, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The parade will assemble downtown on State Street between Niedringhaus and 18th Streets, and will march toward Wilson Park, where union members and families will gather for music, food, and fellowship.
Hosted by the Greater Madison County Federation of Labor AFL-CIO, this year’s theme, “WORKERS DESERVE: Freedom, Fairness & Security”, echoes the values that have long defined Granite City’s workforce. The S.O.A.R. Organization (Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees) will serve as this year’s Parade Marshal, a fitting tribute to those who laid the foundation for today’s labor movement.
Granite City’s pride in its labor force runs deep. From the steel mill to the classrooms, from public service to small businesses, the city’s identity is woven from the grit, skill, and solidarity of its workers. The Labor Day Parade is more than a celebration, it’s a reaffirmation of Granite City’s commitment to honoring those who build, serve, and sustain the community.
“This parade isn’t just about marching—it’s about remembering,” said Dean Webb, President of the Federation. “We celebrate the 8-hour workday, job safety, and everything unions have fought for to make our lives better.”
Residents of all ages are encouraged to come out, line the streets, and show their support. Whether you’re cheering for your local union, waving to familiar faces, or simply soaking in the spirit of solidarity, your presence helps keep this tradition alive. It’s a day to celebrate Granite City’s legacy—and to stand proudly with the workers who make it thrive.
