Illinois Mandates Mental Health Screenings for Schoolchildren:
What Granite City Families Should Know
GraniteCityGossip.com, August 14, 2025

Governor J.B. Pritzker recently signed a landmark law (5B1560) requiring annual mental health screenings for all Illinois public school students in grades 3 through 12, starting in the 2027–2028 school year. The screenings will be free, conducted via digital or paper forms, and designed to identify early signs of depression, anxiety, or trauma. The Illinois State Board of Education will create the screening tools and guidelines by September 1, 2026. Materials will be distributed to districts starting Fall 2026. Parents will have the option to opt their children out, but the goal is to make mental health care as routine as a physical checkup.
Supporters of the law—including educators, mental health advocates, and state officials—say it’s a major step forward. “We’re shifting from reaction to prevention,” said State Superintendent Tony Sanders. Governor Pritzker emphasized that mental health is essential to academic success and lifelong well-being. The law also connects families to the BEACON Portal, a state-run hub for mental health resources, making it easier to find help when needed.
However, not everyone is on board. Critics argue the law may infringe on parental rights and raise privacy concerns. Some worry about false positives—children being mislabeled or misunderstood—and how that data might be used by the local school districts or other third parties. Others question whether schools are equipped to handle the emotional fallout of what these screenings might uncover.
What Do You Think? Granite City families, educators, and community leaders—this law will affect thousands of local students.
