GraniteCityGossip.com January 28, 2026

Illinois American Water has formally requested a rate increase from the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) to support approximately $577 million in infrastructure investments across its service areas. If approved, the new rates would take effect in January 2027 following an 11-month regulatory review.
The proposed rate hike would impact all 148 Illinois communities served by Illinois American Water.
Estimated Monthly Increases.
Water service: ~$14/month for a typical residential customer using 3,500 gallons.
Wastewater service: ~$28/month for the same usage.
These figures are averages and may vary slightly by service area.
The company says the funds will be used to:
Replace 42 miles of aging pipeline.
Upgrade storage tanks, wells, hydrants, meters.
Improve wastewater treatment plants.
Continue lead service line replacement.
Address PFAS and other emerging contaminants.
To help offset costs, the proposal includes:
Discounted rates for the first 2,000 gallons.
Assistance programs like H2O Help to Others.
Budget billing and flexible payment plans.
Granite City residents are already feeling the financial strain following the sale of the city-owned water treatment plant, and this proposed rate hike from Illinois American Water adds another layer of pressure to household budgets across the community.
