Despite repeated warnings from local authorities about the dangers of celebratory gunfire, several Granite City residents rang in the New Year with reckless and illegal behavior and ended the night in handcuffs.
According to the Granite City Police Department, officers responded to numerous “shots fired” calls throughout the evening as celebrations escalated. During two of those incidents, officers gathered enough information to obtain separate search warrants for homes where individuals were reportedly firing rounds into the air or into the ground.
The searches confirmed the reports. Several people were taken into custody, and officers seized eight firearms along with a significant amount of ammunition.
Police emphasized that celebratory gunfire is not only illegal but poses a serious risk to the community. Bullets fired into the air must come down, often unpredictably, and rounds fired into the ground can ricochet with deadly consequences.
“The Granite City Police Department takes this behavior very seriously and it will not be tolerated,” the department stated.
Authorities are urging residents to celebrate responsibly and to remember that gunfire, even intended as celebration — endangers neighbors, damages property, and strains emergency resources.
