Granite City High School Environmental Club was named the 2024 Madison County Green Schools Program “Green Team of the Year”, as announced by Madison County.
The Madison County Green Schools Program Green Team of the Year award recognizes students and/or staff that demonstrate a commitment to organizing, managing, and leading conservation-related activities as part of the Madison County Green Schools Program.
Madison County Green Schools Program Coordinator Lisa Rogers presented GCHS Science Teacher Kathy Conley and the Environmental Club with a Certificate of Recognition and a $500 stipend to be used on environmental-related programs. In addition, Conley and members of the club were recognized at the May 28 GCSD9 Board Meeting and received a $250 donation from Local 392 Iron Workers.
Nominated by Conley, the GCHS Environmental Club worked to provide opportunities to students and staff at GCHS centered around recycling, gardening, composting and continual improvements in environmental stewardship.
Seniors Peyton Robison and Marina Roeder went to the GCSD9 School Board a year ago to get permission to start the club. “The students formed an environmental club this past year and it turned out to be a success, not only for the students but our community,” Conley said. The Environmental Club held fundraisers throughout the year, including one where they collected more than 300 pounds of soda tabs. The students also worked at cleaning up the GCHS campus and have plans to start a garden next year.
Prather Pre-K/Kindergarten Center also received the honor in 2021.

Everyone loves a puppy, young curious playful creatures with a lifetime of love ahead of them. Sadly, more often than not the older residents of shelters quickly learn to not get overly excited when potential pet owners make their rounds through the facilities shopping for that perfect pet to take home. They have learned the routine and behavior from being quickly passed by, often never given a second glance because of their age and hints of gray fur that is beginning to show on their hopeful faces.
Please, not so fast. The benefits of adopting a senior pet can easily make up for the shorter time span together with a new forever family. Many of these pets are housebroken or litter box trained. They often want nothing more than love and companionship and a comfy spot in a home with a family or their new human. Most if not all the bad habits are behind them with no need to chew and destroy your favorite pair of shoes. Many have been leash trained and can follow simple commands. The pets featured here are seniors that continue to be overlooked because of their age. Anyone interested in adopting should stop by either of our locations during business hours to meet with available animals: Monday-Saturday 11:30-5 and Sunday 11:30-3. 8495 State Route 143, Edwardsville, Illinois.
