ENTRY HALLWAY

When the house was purchased there was a bathroom in this hall area, with the tub being
against the backdoor.  We took out the bathroom and restored the entry, as Mr. Emmert would
have known it.  You will notice the transom above the front door, found in most homes for
ventilation.  The entire fence around the property is the original one and was restored by the Boy
Scouts.  You will also notice some tombstones in the yard.  These are unrelated to anyone from
the house.  They were found on the floor of an old barn in the area and given to the museum.
There were 5-7 coats of paint on the stairway that took much hard work to remove and restore to
its beautiful pine finish.  There are several plaques on the wall containing contributors to the
restoration of the Emmer/Zippel house.  The lighted display case was donated by K-Mart and
allows us to have special displays.  On the racks are various pieces of clothing and hats.  Once
belonged to Mr. Schildman who was an undertaker and started a business in Venice in the
horse and buggy days.  He was also an undertaker in Granite City in the building now owned by
Randall Irwin on Madison Avenue.  When Mr. Irwin put in now lights he gave us the old ones.
The lightning fixtures were probably originally gaslights.  We also have some publications for
sale which tell of area and local history.
