Six Mile Regional Library District "The first Granite City public library was opened on December 16, 1912. The above photo is the main location at 2001 Delmar Avenue and was dedicated in 1929. There is also a branch location at 2145 Johnson Road. In the background is the German Zion Methodist Church, which is currently the library's parking lot." Once again, local entrepreneur Brenda Whitaker turns her vision into reality. The owner of the Garden Gate Tea Room accomplished her dream when she took on the task of a large renovation to transform a grand old church into the beautiful and successful Alfresco Performing Arts Center. Now, Brenda has moved on to her next project and is investing in our community once again. The owners of BSR Used Book Store, located at 1400 Niedringhaus in Granite City recently closed the business to relocate closer to family. Rather than see the business close permanently, Brenda decided to take on the task of another renovation, with one goal in mind....keeping the book store that everyone has grown to love, but with a twist. So, watch for the opening date for the Novel Idea Book Store and More! |
HAPPY RETIREMENT MARILYN CHAMPION Long time Granite City business woman Marilyn Champion is closing the doors of "Champion's Party Room" on June 25th after serving our community for more than sixty years. Marilyn began her career in the late 50's with "Champion's School of Baton" (of which this writer was a graduate). She married Paul Lunsford in the 70's and together they opened "Marilyn's House of Fashion". Marilyn and Paul joined her mother at the Party Room in the 1980's and took over full time upon her retirement.. Marilyn decorated for weddings, showers, our proms and parties for the next three decades. Upon Paul's death 2001 Marilyn became sole proprietor. She is inviting former brides, students and customers to visit before the final day, she would love to say good bye in person. Thank you Marilyn from many a grateful bride, and old baton twirlers like myself. |
